I left a job under bad circumstances and the boss asked me to bring in my passport so we can take it in and cancel the RP.

I refused to come in and do that. He said I will suffer the consequences.

What are the consequences? Can he have my RP canceled without me?

I'm sure it all depends on his relationships in the police.

I'm planning on leaving in two or three weeks anyway. Should I change my RP myself?

Any horror stories to share?

links would be appreciated as well

Yes, the official procedure is that YOU must go to the police department with your passport with a school official and cancel the permit. If you refuse to go there, then you can be denied issuance of a new permit. In addition, when you follow procedure, you are (generally) issued a short term visitor visa. If you do not follow procedure, you could be issued a 3 day exit visa, causing you to be in the country illegally if you remain in country.

I guess I am still new here. Why do you refer to them as police and not immigration?

Because they are the police, not immigration. The PSB (Public Security Bureau) handles public registration (such as the resident permit) and immigration type processes for foreigners.

Do you live on or off campus? If the police show up at your door and demand your passport then you are obligated to give it up to them. No one can tell you how to answer them. I am not going to suggest you do anything that might be considered wrong.

I once sent my passport off to get extra pages added. It took me two weeks to get it back. I didn't have my passport during that time.

If you live off campus than you are in a better position. If you live on campus then you could be evicted at anytime. But you can usually beg for a couple of days to finish things up.

Locate a new job ASAP and start making plans.

Good luck.

Some, maybe not all, provinces will allow you to cancel your RP yourself. You can go to the Entry and Exit Dept and apply for a 30 day tourist visa. When it is approved, your RP is canceled.

Luckily I live off-campus.

I've more or less made my plans and they don't include China.

Apparently it's a long process for an employer to cancel my visa sans passport so I'll have the month it'll take me to get out of here.

Dear OP, I am in the same situation. I heard from a reliable source i.e my new employer high-up in the government, that they can apply to have your permit cancelled, but only under serious circumstances. Such as, if you broke the law or stole something. In one case he tried to hire a foreigner who assaulted a police officer (he only found this out when applying for a new visa/f.e.c) and couldn't get around it, even with his great deal of guanxi and connections.
If you're leaving soon anyway, I wouldn't worry about it.
best of luck!
