My name is Tina Beattie and I am a graduate student at Grand Valley State University completing my Masters in Education with an emphasis on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

For my thesis I am conducting a case study on the ways in which context affects English teachers methodologies in teaching English in foreign settings.

For this research I am in need of volunteers, specifically volunteers who are native English speakers and who are in their first year of teaching English in a foreign setting.

The research will consist of one questionnaire and two on-line interviews coordinated between myself and the participant. All data collected in this study will be stored on a secure external hard drive and will be deleted three years after the completion of the study.

The participant will need to have access to a secure computer, e-mail program, and on-line chat programs.

If you are interested in participating in this research or have further questions about it please e-mail me at [email protected]

All participants will have the right to withdraw from the study at any point without fear of penalty.

This Exempt research protocol has been approved by the Human Research Review Committee at Grand Valley State University. File No. 10-173-H.

You want people in their first year; most of whom have only just started this April and (especially in the case of ALTs) may have been at school(s) for as little as a week and not really had to teach anything yet? Confused

That is a very strange way to word a request aimed at "volunteers".
Will they be somehow compensated for their time?

I think you've missed my point...

I started back on the 5th but I know many who started only last week (like you). And yes, some schools have had proper lessons which is why I used may to express possibilty as opposed to the more definate have. Many JHS have no 3rd years at the beginning of the year since they go on trips to places like Kyoto and Nara. And lessons can often be quite sparse and days quite short because HRT have to visit the homes of all their students. And whilst some schools drop the ALTs right into lessons, some give them time to adjust. Even in my first week, I did very little due to all the formalities and orientation sessions going on.

And when you consider that a large number of new recruits are arriving fresh out of uni with little to no teaching experience yet along EFL/ESL experience, even one week solid of lessons (which many probably haven't had) isn't enough time to have established a methodology. So how are they going to give their opinion on "the ways in which context affects English teachers methodologies in teaching English in foreign settings".

If the OP had come here last month and asked for the input from 1st years, it would have made much more sense.

If many people have just recently started teaching for their first year abroad, then it is still okay to participate. I am interested in the experiences first time instructors have in teaching English in a foreign setting/context, so even if it's been only for a couple of weeks it is still relevant. Maybe participation will help many with their teaching and adjustment to life and work in a foreign country. In other words, I am not expecting someone to have a formal essay about teaching in their context and what methodology they are using. I'm not expecting anything that formal or that level of expertise. I just want to know one's thoughts, opinions, and reactions about matters pertaining to teaching English and living and working in another country. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

JALT and ETJ are organizations with lots of teachers and ALTs, but the problem is, not many newbies join.
