Hi. I'm asking this on behalf of my friend. He has a BA in English Language Education and an MA in TESOL with good grades from reputable British universities but he has less than a year of teaching experience under his belt. Can he get a job in the Middle East, say KSA, and if so, what kind of salary will he be looking at? He's interested in university teaching. |

I can't speak to KSA - but he certainly doesn't qualify for university teaching in the rest of the GCC without 3+post grad years teaching. I would suspect he might be hired by the bottom feeders in KSA and possibly elsewhere - he wouldn't enjoy the experience IMHO |

Thanks, Helen. We didn't realise it was going to be that hard. Doesn't the fact that he graduated from two redbrick British universities account for anything? |

Not really... in education it rarely matters where your credentials are from as long as the institution is accredited.

I suppose the OP mentions "redbrick" in the sense that Americans use the term "brick-and-mortar" universities as opposed to distance degrees...althought normally the British term "redbrick" refers to all of the reputable UK universities that are not Cambridge or Oxford. One would hope he or she doesn't mean the person's education is considered superior to the rest of ours. If that were the case I would advise checking both the Chinese and the British international rankings. |
