"Good" and "online TEFL certificate" don't usually collocate.

Surely there must be something. If I was back in the States or in Japan, I would then just get my certificate there, but, I am not so....

Nope. Nothing that is really recognised by Japanese employers. A few will know about CELTA or DELTA and that's about it. And the reason for that is simply that the Japanese market doesn't ask for much more than a undergrad degree. When it does, it is usually after a Master's.

The sad fact is that the vast majority of online qualifications out there (esp. in the TFL/TSl field IMO) are simply garbage. If they're not run directly from a real university or polytech then I would say they are entirely garbage.

YMMV.

This may not be online but the 130 hour SIT course looks to be one of those few credible TESOL programs that is shorter to take and is offered throughout the year. It's on tesol.org
http://www.tesol.org/s_tesol/sec_document.asp?CID=232&DID=399
and the SIT website is here

Well then:
  • Where are you?
  • How much money do you have?
  • How much time do you have?
Maybe there's an alternative.

I don't know if the British Council offer a part-time course, and I don't know if it will be possible for you to take the part-time course at IGSE.

Hi there,

I got my TESOL and TEFL certificates through UCLA Extension when I lived and taught in Japan. I was new to teaching the and the courses were actually helpful and not that expensive. It is a rigorous program which will take about a year and includes a practicum. You can use your school to complete that requirement.

Another online program is through Shenandoah University in Virginia. They have a TESOL certificate that can be applied toward their M.S. Ed. in TESOL. The courses are reasonable by accredited institution standards and there is no mention of the courses being taken online versus brick and mortar. I am just finishing my masters through S.U. Although, if you just want a certificate that is recognized in Japan, I'd go the UCLA route.

Good luck and enjoy Japan. It was one of the best experiences of my life and when I finish out here in the Middle East, I plan on relocating back there.

There's a certificate being offered by TESOL (the major international US-based ESL/EFL-teaching organization, which is a new thing they started last year. I wrote about it here:

If I had to go with an online certificate, I'd consider it, although the UCLA Extension one sounds good as it's probably accredited.

A better bet for you would be to just slowly hammer away at an off-campus masters degree from the UK or Australia. You could do a university graduate certificate as a sort of step towards it, and then use those credits towards the masters.

For example,
a graduate certificate in TESOL:

A masters degree in TESOL from the same university:
