It seems there is an endless list of ESL schools in China from the EF and Joy networks to individual operations.

Has anyone created ... does some source offer ... a sort of "Top 10" ESL Schools to work for in China?

I've been here since 1994, and I'd love to see a top 10 list for the common entry level ESL jobs....even a top 2. Of course, it would need a clear logical explanation. Laughing
Cheers,and good luck

How would you even begin to make such a list? Those "Top 10" would be next to impossible to land a job in with the sheer number of applicants and the schools would get wise on it and use it to their advantage which would probably make the school fall off said "Top 10." Seems pointless.

Thank you for both the sincere and witty/cynical responses.

The latter seems a hallmark of ESL China Teacher chat ... hmmmmnnn.

One way such a "Top 10" could be codified (and be more teacher-centric/serving than school-centric/serving)... time consuming ... but I'd be a ready volunteer ... is to invite input here on Dave's for ESL Teacher input on objective criteria by which each personally evaluates the "Potential Quotient" (potential of the teaching experience in each/every facet) of an ESL School experience .... all those objective criteria ... through an on-going dialog get synthesized to a workable number (that nevertheless does not eliminate any critical 'concept' for evaluating) ... then again through dialog gain how one might word a 1 to 5 objective rating of each ..... get all that in some final form and invite all the ESL Teachers who would take the probably 10-15 minutes to fill out a "PQ" form on each school they'd experienced (with some sort of weighting on 3 month versus 2 or 5 year experiences , new teacher versus Training Director experiences)

Then make the results universally available to all extant & potential China ESL Teachers ....

What schools earned 5's or high 4's versus the 1's and 2's would be noted.

Possibly the lowers would need to pay higher and/or work on improving.

The survey could be redone every 6 months.

Noting also how different teachers rated differently the same school and seek to understand why.

If it was broadly disseminated and ESL Teacher effective ... it might very well educate China ESL Schools on values & criteria & operating standards to hold as standards of excellence.

As to the "big rush" to 5's .... well if 6 months later the old 5's crashed to below 4 or 3 .... then the China ESL Teacher Community would be alert to the school's abuse of it's "fifteen minutes" of celebrity.

There's my thoughts on it.

ANY CHINA HAND" ESL TEACHER RESPONSE ??????????

They have a perfectly good operating standard now. It is called Profit. How they get it, what they have to do to get it is completely immaterial.

You would soon see the "ballot box" being stuffed by shills and the Top 1 school would have pictures of Peking Uni with The Utopia Gardens Apartments as accommodations..when you sign the contract and arrive at your fine Top 1 school, you would find a chicken coop with cardboard boxes for desks as the school and your "living accommodations" would be a sleeping bag under the Rooster's perch!

The only way to size up a school is in person. Each person has their own criteria as to what is or is not acceptable for teaching and living conditions.
