|
|
I've seen a few adverts for Vietnam and the work looked interesting. I was wondering what a reasonable salary was for working with adults. I have a degree, Cert.TESOL & about five years experience.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
Cheers

The wages in Saigon run about $12.00 to 15.00 an hour at the better language centers. With TESL or any other certification and experience you can make up to 18.00. stan |

Hope this helps. |

Previous posted quoted $12-$15 hour. Thats pretty low, and at that rate I for one wouldn't bother.
I currently average $22 p.h and sometimes $25+.
Maybe I'm Mr Greedy, but it proves if you feel you are worth more, you can get it.
By the way, I currently work 30+ hrs per week and am refusing offers of more. So there IS real money to be made in Vietnam-real compared to the cost of living that is. |

40,000 dollars? No.
Most Uni work is part-time at the normal wages. Sometimes University instructors get a little more depending on what subject they are teaching (MBA classes, etc.)
My friends and I have worked at Universities over the years. Good students, out-dated facilities, older rooms that are bad for acoustics. You have to be flexible.

If you're asking about these numbers you should have an MA in EFL, be under 55 and go to the Middle East to teach. And even in the Middle East you will not even come close to earning those numbers.
Honestly, if you want to earn those numbers, you'll have to go into another industry entirely.

Less than half of that.
For international schools you need a teaching license in your home country. My friend with a Master's in Education makes a third of what you are quoting (at 60K per year).
If you want to ask about salaries, do not go into EFL. Go into another industry all together.
The competition at International schools has increased significantly in the last couple of years because of the US state budget cuts and poor economy, also.
Best of luck. |

shibain,
Please re-read my post above.
No, you will not get 35K US at a Uni or an International school in Vietnam.
Much lower |

I think there are some strange ideas about work here. Yes, most positions are part-time. Yes, you can make 20-25 dollars an hour. But what about the preperation time and correction of homework?
If you are a real teacher/instructor who cares, you prepare and take work home for each lesson. It sucks but that is life as a teacher.
You can do what most teachers do here and wing it and just open up the book. I don't care what anyone else does in their classroom. I am NOT targeting anyone or putting anyone down that does.
Bottom line, if you account for all your hours and what the administration requires the base pay for part-time instructors probably is about $12-15. Granted if you are teaching the same subject over and over again you recycle lessons with minor changes. Fair enough and why not?
$40,000 OMG.
I know a person that has been at the same international school for many years with a MA from one of the top universities in Educational Admin. He makes $15.
You have to factor in all the pros and cons and not just look at money. |
