Hi all,

We're about to book our flights from the UK to KL (Malaysia) and really need some advice. We'll be flying with a 6-month-old baby and a 4-year-old. We were about to book with Emirates, but I've just been reading lots of reviews complaining about the removal of footrests which would be a major problem for someone of my height.

Can anyone recommend a good service and (preferably) plane model to fly with. If you have any experiences you'd be willing to share, I'd be most grateful.

We will need a skycot OR the ability to take on a carseat for the baby to be able to rest properly.

Any advice - any at all - very much appreciated.
Thanks for your help.

If you want to take a car-seat (and use it in flight) all you need to do is buy the baby a seat (same price as your 4yr old.)

If you want the baby flying as an infant (10% of ticket cost) instead of 75% (youth 2-12) then you should ask for a skycot and be assigned to a bulkhead seat/

Skycots are assigned to bulkhead seats and those seats have never had footrests but they do have lots of legroom (usually double that of a normal economy class seat).

Skycots cannot be used when the seat-belt sign is lit, you have to hold the baby. They are great for most of the flight if there is no or minimal turbulence.

For all intents and purposes any of the A320-A340 or Boeing aircraft are similar in space on the bulkhead seating as well as having your table come up from the armrest instead of a seat-back.

We have flown often with our little one. Her first flight was before she was 6m and she has accumulated more flier miles than many business travelers. (22 international flights by the time she was 2).

Excellent advice thanks. I didn't know this was an option. I'm guessing they also get the luggage allowance then too?

I've been reading reviews that say that the Airbus seats are very hard for such long flights. Is this your experience?

Thanks so much for bothering to respond. I really appreciate it. Very Happy

Hi there.....I am going to have a little rant but bear with me!

IMO, Emirates are ok. I flew from Dubai- Cyprus about 26 weeks pregnant with a 1 year old as well. Turned into an 8 hour flight.....seats felt "odd". Really high (for me) from the ground and I got a bit uncomfortable. Thought it was just being pregnant until I asked a flight assistnat who said she wasn't too keen on them either. However with the baby in the basinett and a bulkead seat it was ok, I just jammed my feet against the wall and since I am pretty short (5 foor 3). You said you were tall, so maybe the higher seats will be good for you.

Stay away from Malaysian Airlines from Dubai area - KL....... not sure if it's the same for KL -Europe, but a lot of the flights seem to stop in Dubai so it seems fairly likely they connect. It's nasty-as service, horrible planes. Have flown Malaysian between Australia/HK/Singapore and service is pretty good but there is something goes very wrong in terms of service once you leave KL. Staff seem lobotomised and incapable of efficient, logical customer support. Don't want to hijack your thread with the details but I had a horrible, horrible, horrible experience with them. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

So in sum....Emirates- ok, recommend you save your money and get the bassinette, car seats are a pain in the rear schlepping around. Throw them in the hold! You'll probably spend half the flight walking around with the 4 year old anyway so the funny seats might be bearable.

The only problem I have encountered with some airlines is when you book online you have to confirm that the kids will get children's meals. Also, some don't let you book an infant online (well, RBA don't, for example) and you have to go in an do it at an office.

Good luck with the move!

Hi BB and thanks for your response - even rants are appreciated Laughing I'm actually quite small rather than tall but there have been so many complaints about the foot rests that we've decided to give Emirates a miss. Now we are looking at flying with Qatar Air so if anyone has any last-minute warnings, let us know asap!

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
