Piece of cake! Go to a Mega/Comercial Mexicana store that has a Tesorera department (In D.F. Chabacano, Tlatalolco, Miguel Angel de Quevedo), ask for the drivers license application, go to the checkout and pay it ($400-500 MX, don't know exactly) go back to the office with proof of address and official ID, they will process it and give it to you, and that's it. No proof of ability to drive, medical, eye test, nothing. If you are not in D.F., I'm not sure... |

The DL in DF is now good for 3 years (used to be forever, lucky me I got one of those ) and you'll need a FM-3/2 to get one along with your CURP.
Same goes in Mexico State but they only issue them for 1 year to foreigners. |

Some states, apparently, do have driving tests for the license, so it depends where tvik is located.
I don't know how it is now, but in DF it used to be that if you had an FM3 your drivers license was for 1 year, while if you had an FM2 it was the same term as the locals. I have the forever one, too... until I lose it. |

A Kiwi amigo of mine on a FM-3 just got a DL in DF good for 3 years, same as a Mexican. |

Each State is different in their requirements for foreigners. Written, driving, blood test, eye test, FM3, is required for a 2 year license here, at a cost of slightly over 300 pesos. They also initially require a letter of "recommendation" from a national who must produce his national credential.
Here, a national can get a license for either two or four years. A foreigner, even with an FM2, can be issued one for only two years. |

Automatic ones are like US automatic cars, but it's easier to find standard versions than in Canada, and, I presume, the US. |

Most cars in Mexico are stick-shift. |

Driving in the city in is ridiculous, be it Guadalajara, Puebla, Queretaro, and Mexico City-- well, enough said.
There's no sense of order, no organization... Well, that's Mexico in so many ways, but on the road at least I'd like for people to not drive with a death wish. I consistently see cars flipped over and from time to time a dead pedestrian on the road. And then when I beep at the horrific drivers, I get a "Pendejo" thrown my way. Figures. |
