I have been offered a position teaching at Ulaanbaatar International School. The work loads seems like quite a bit while only making $1000/month. Has anyone heard anything about this school? Is it decent or is like Santis? Is $1000 even reasonable to live on (rent is free)?
Any advice about the school or working in Mongolia in general would be appreciated. I hear the capital is dull to look at but the countryside is beautiful. |

If rent is free then $1000 is enough. You could probably even save up to $500 a month and still live relatively comfortable. From my experience working in Mongolia requires a great deal of patience, but if your the type of person who can go with the flow and don't have too many preconceived notions about the "right way" to do things then you should be fine. Mongolia seems to be a place where people either love it or hate it. The capital is a bit dull and extremely polluted and getting to the countryside is a pain in the ass as decent roads outside of the UB-Darkhan-Erdenet triangle are pretty much non-existent. That being said, it can be a fun and interesting place to work and live. |

I've also been offered a job at Elite and to be honest I'm growing a bit suspicious of the school...they offered me the job without even interviewing me and when i communicate with the principal via email, he's rather evasive on issues relating to work conditions and accommodation...what was your experience Uncle Turk? The hours seem long too and they demand a lot of extra duties on weekends...not really sure what to do...and especially after reading another review on this website by a former teacher called Lyndon, I'm a bit afraid... |

I have declined the position. It just didn't seem like a good fit. Offering a job without an interview. Long hours, no prep time, extra duties for a lot less pay than I have right now. $1000 a month with free rent may seem OK for Mongolia, but not for my bills back home. |
