|
|
Hello All,
I'm a US citizen planning to move and work in Indonesia as an ESL teacher.
What documents will I need to carry with me to become employed in Indonesia?
What documents will I need to make certified copies of at home before I leave?
Thank you for your help.

Hey,
You will be 100% in the clear if you bring the following:
University Diploma, transcripts, teaching certification/license (all translated into Indonesian) and a clean bill of health from a doctor (including results of HIV/AIDS test and drug test). Any other documents will be provided for by the employer. |

Not required if the originals are in English. |

if u have a pulse, ef will hire u no documents needed. i have been here 14 years and the only time i was asked for a copy of my university degree and trascripts was when i started working at an international school. language schools and nationalplus schools never asked. and i never needed any of them translated into english. never need a medical checkup or an aids test, rules are changing but u can easily get those things done here much cheaper that hawaii.
what type of job do u have and what are your qualifications? are u planning on having a job before u arrive or show up and hand our cv's?

exactly. Working at a Nat plus school, last year they were not needed, this year they are. luckily I'm going back home in a few months so I can pick up a copy of my transcripts; who ever thought they would be needed?!? |

Since 2007, I have always been asked for at least a scanned copy of my degree and a transcript. Luckily I kept them handy. |

Thanks for the replies.
I am surprised by the previous post. All I have read explicitly says Indonesian employers require an ESL certificate and diploma in order to be sponsored by an employer for a work visa.
May you enlighten me to how it is on the ground. I was planning to take an ESL course in Indonesia in order to obtain employment.
I have a BA and have been working for a Community College the last four years. I was planning on finding work after I arrived this June. Does this sound possible?

You can get a CELTA with The British Institute in Jakarta and I believe IALF offer the Trinity cert (best check though)
Saying that, I have known employers who have employed teachers without an EFL/ESL qualification, even some organisations who claim all their teachers are qualified. |

So basically, degree cert, transcripts and teaching cert, should suffice for language schools? Have I got that right?
How about medical, background checks, etc? Sorry, I'm still not clear about this.
Cheers |

i would think u could do a bit better than a language school if u have a teching cert, unless u mean ESL cert.
i would contact serval employers even if u have no desire to work for them and ask them what documents u need. that way, even if u plan to arrive and then look for a job u will have the documents you need.
a friend of mine with lots of experience but no degree was offered a job last week by a nationaplus/international school. the HOD told him not to worry about not having a uni degree as they had an awesome laser printer that would make one for him. all in all, this is still indonesia.
good luck to all job seekers.
u can get a comprehensive medical check up for 100 dollars, but i think anyting required for teachers would be significantly less. i also believe most embassies are able to provide police clearance but no idea how long this would take |
