I'm not entirely sure about the difference between the two, but I do know that the benefits of being a foreign expert are likely due to the fact that you hold a Foreign Experts Certificate.

It's a really neato little booklet. I found it was most useful when i needed to send home money.

It was also useful when I returned to China after a two week trip home for xmas. My passport has so many chinese visa extensions and re-entry pages, that the airport people were a little slow in allowing me to go through.

but then I flashed the FEC, and they waved me through as if I were a chinese citizen.

It seems that the more "legit" a school is, the higher your chance of getting one of these FECs.
or at least that's my understanding.
anyone else have any thoughts?

Are you saying that being hired by one of these schools is a way to obtain an FEC?

Are there any other ways of obtaining an FEC?

if there's another way, i'm not aware of it.

you'd need major govt guanxi to get one, I expect, and that usually can only be provided by a school...

the owner of the school i worked for supposedly had some ties with the provincial govt, and apparently that was enough.

I have heard you need the FE card-red book- to legally convert currency and I think that is the only real difference.

If the dodgy (semi) institute that employs me now can get FE cards I dread to think of working for one onethat cannot even do this. Are you all not Experts???

Perhaps we should open a new board where only Foreign Experts are allowed to post. Wink
