I had a nice year, the time flew by this year. I can't believe its been 8 months already. I just noticed the day, and it got me thinking about next year. Should I look for a new gig? Can I get a raise here? Pack it all in and head home, or try some other country?

I was wondering how everybody else did? I was hoping for some numbers to compare salary and work load and living conditions. I don't mind sharing mine, but I do believe in keeping things vague for our own protection.

Z-Visa, Foreign Expert Certificate ( meaning legal to work and paying some taxes )
working at Senior High School, 5000/month plus off campus apartment and all amenities covered by the school,
about 16 hours of work a week,
free weekends and evenings,
4 hours of private tutoring on weekends, 50RMB per student per hour, another 2400 - 3600RMB a month
Small city in Jiangsu, about 200,000 people

returning teachers at my school get an extra 500rmb per month.. they also kick in half pay over the summer. I will sign my third contract with them in a week or 2. the conditions at the school are pretty good.. the pay is above average for the amount of hours and the school has not broken the contract/trust... i am growing tired of Wuhan tho

Sounds like you had a great year.. if ur happy with the school/city/salary why risk a move? then again if ur a single guy with a bit of cash in the bank why not Smile I would like to leave wuhan after this contract except im a married guy and the smart play is to save another 60,000rmb before jumping into the unknown

test the waters with ur boss... have other teachers signed for a second year? did they get more money? 500-1000 more per month is a small price for the school to pay to avoid recruiting new teachers and all the risk that comes with it.

Thanks, it was a good year.

I guess what I was hinting at was, "Is the bottom still falling out?" I started thoroughly following the post here 2 years ago. 5000 was a bit low at first, now it pretty standard for High School ( outside Beijing and Shanghai ). Plus I also turned down Uni offers for the same amount 2 years ago.

This forum is pretty much the only contact I have with other FT's.

I am trying to judge how valuable I am.

its a tight question... i have 1 buddy pulling in 20000+ teaching business english(has BA and 1 year exp.) another guy without a degree is making 4000(only 6 hours a week tho) there is a big gap from school to school.. some training centres in wuhan pay 6000 with shared acc. others pay 10000

Living in a small city makes it harder to move up to a high paying job... if you move to another city u may need to start at the bottom before making some local contacts. I have no clue what we are worth but im sure its a hell than i get Smile
