A friend of mine told me about Arizona State's
Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction - Bilingual Education (BLE)
and
Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction - English as a Second Language (ESL)
The look legit. They have a fast track programme, so you can take th 10 courses in 13 months. It's about 504 dollars a credit. 30 credits total. If you do it online, you do a comprehensive written and oral exam. Here's more info. http://asuonline.asu.edu/degree-programs |

If it's from a state university then it should be legitimate because state universities are government institutions and, therefore, fully accredited. |

Hi Naturegirl,
Don't you think $15,120 is rather expensive for an on-line course? Add on the price of books etc., and that seems very pricey. You can do a face-to-face course, with the stimulation of fellow students, for less than that. |

An online course? This is a master's degree program (I can't believe you woud try to compare a mere TESL course with a master's degree program). Now, you decide whether that's too much to pay for an entire master's degree program.
Here's ASU's Fall 2010 Tuition Fee Schedule: http://www.asu.edu/admissions/tuitionandfees/fall10graduate.htm
This is cost per semester. The two programs are also not the same as that university's MTESOL offered through its English department. |

Chancellor,
Of course I'm not comparing a Master's programme with a mere TESL course!
Here in the UK, you can do a full time Masters at a top-ranking university (ie. in the world's top 20) for 4,950 - 3,500 a year. Distance programmes are similarly priced, and they include campus exams and weekend input sessions, from leading EFL specialists. |

I disagree. Most of the MA I've looked at are that price. Plus, while tuition is the same if I did an on campus one, I wouldn't be able to work full time and cost of living is much higher there than it is here. |

If you have UK residency. I don't. Costs are much higher for intl students. |

Yes, that is the going rate.
I would definitely go for it. Make sure to be in close contact with them for the 'fine print'. I've been dissuaded from applying to programs for things like having a too low Bachelor's GPA, not being a certified teacher in the US, and not planning to teach full time while I got my Master's (an actual requirement, which seems crazy to me!) |
