Here's a little dittie I got in response to my letter of application for an ESL Teacher post in GZ. PM me if you want to know more!
"will you be able to teach computing and business by the way? if so ,, we will offer you 7000 monthly salary, 1500housing allowance, 1000to 1500 bonus per month,,that's all together 9500to 10000 per month. if you find this acceptable, i hope you could get a tourist visa ASAP, then come to China, we will transfer this to working visa within one month" |

What's wrong with that? Not uncommon at all. |

I would definitely question the bonus. It may be that they are referring to the R/T airfare bonus and they are trying to make it sound like a standard monthly bonus that you may or may not get.
I would also say that if they can get you a Z visa after you get there, they can do it before you get there.
Standard protocol is for them to send you a copy of the work permit and Invitation Letter so you can get a Z visa before you leave home. A confirmed contract with any agree upon addendum is also fairly standard.
Having written "standard" three times now, I will also say that "standard" is anything and everything you/they can negotiate/get away with/lie about/steal/barter/accept/grab/withhold, etc, etc. |

I'm in China on a student visa. I wonder whether it would be possible for a potential employer to buy a work permit from a student permit?
My view is that China is booming, it is in the WTO, why does it insult by making such a low offer? |

some parts of china are booming, others are not. and there's little, if any, connection between china's membership in any intl organization and esl salaries. if you feel insulted by an offer, you're free to look for other jobs. |

NO WAY! They are asking you to do something illegal. You cannot be employed or teach on a tourist Visa. You will be subject to a fine. Don't go without a Z-Visa. They amount of money they are offering is too low too risk it. Don't be a sucker! |
