Are there ANY jobs in Spain? Spanish friends keep telling me that there are still lots of jobs teaching English in Spain as almost "everybody wants/needs to learn it". BUT, when I check the International jobs board on this site there seems to be hardly any teaching jobs in Spain? Where are they all?
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Me deprimida mucho |

You have to be there to find them. They're not advertised from abroad. |

True. There are loads of jobs in Madrid at the moment. It's all going to die in a few months though when summer arrives. |

There's a ton of work out there at the moment, but as Mozzar quite rightly points out, it'll all grind to a halt over summer. A lot of companies and students are ending courses at the end of June, thus leaving a gap of July, August and September (most courses get going again at the end of September)
Many companies here only really recruit locally, preferring to have a teacher who's already on the ground here, which may explain why you're not seeing many jobs on the international jobs boards.

Gracias for the replies. I'm kind of in a bit of a rut, as to move to Spain would require some savings, but I don't have any. My current position here isn't good, I'm spending all the money I get on rent, bills and living costs......just simply surviving. I don't have a TEFL yet either, though was considering paying for one on credit card and doing it this summer, as I know it's necessary.
Damned!
Has anyone else been in a rut and managed to get themselves out? At the moment I feel life is just passing by and things aren't going anywhere. |

I was in a rut like this some years back. It took serious extra effort to get out- I took an extra job and saved that money only for the next step. I was exhausted for six months, but the extra effort I put out has been worth it for well over 15 years now - it really enabled me to change my life in every way.
Good luck |

Just out of interest. What do people do over the summer (moneywise)? As it seems most people are rendered unemployed for 2 months. Is there anyone out there on a 12 month contract? I'd guess that native Spanish people get paid over the summer period.
Also, does anyone know of any recruiters for teaching jobs in Spain? Jobs must be out there somewhere.
I think I'm going to try and get a CELTA/Trinity this summer, as it seems like that's a minimum requirement for any ESL job in Europe. Then head over to Spain for a couple of weeks job hunting in early September (though I have no idea where yet). Does that sound like an okay plan?

Yeah, I have a university job and I'm paid 12 months. But I've also got an MA TESL/TEFL and 12 plus years of experience
....with a CELTA or equivalent, you can hope to grab a summer camp, but really it's true that summer work is thin on the ground.
I don't mean to be bragging or lording it over anyone - I've paid my dues for it, as have many of us who do eke out an actual living in Western Europe.
It's just a seriously competitive job market.
Good luck to you - in the long term, if you've got the commitment, you can make it. But the bottom line is that it ain't easy.
On the recruiter issue - not really. There are plenty of teachers in country, and it's just not necessary to take a chance on someone from afar, in most cases. |

Sorry - on a more positive note, your plan sounds totally feasible. Good luck, truly! |

Gracias (I'm already learning Spanish in my spare time).
I found a company with an 'English in a Spanish home' programme. You pay about 300Euros placement fee and they match you up with a family. You teach them English for 15 hours a week and in return get board and lodgings.
It doesn't sound ideal but it might be a starting point and a way to get to Spain without needing a big wad of savings for deposits, rent, living costs etc.
Also, it seems like there should be a lot of time free to go job hunting etc. |

That would explain why I actually got 'interest' from a school in Madrid based on my CV alone.
The only worry there is that in a couple of months time I'd be jobless in one of the most expensive Cities Worldwide.
Regardless, it was a confidence boost to be asked to an " interview", as I'd started to get a bit down.
Must get CELTA. Must get CELTA! |
