Hi all,
New to the board and was wondering if schools (particularly in HK) check to see what type of TESOL certificate one has. Does it matter whether its a Trinity-certified TESOL certificate or if you received one from a for-profit school?
I'm looking to enroll in a program in New York City and finding it hard to find one that offers a TESOL certificate course at a local college so I am resigned to taking one at a for-profit school but not sure what I'll get out of it especially if its something that gets completed in about a weeks time.
Another quick question: do HK schools recognize just the CELTA alone?
Any help? |

If you're looking for a NET job in HK with the EDB, then only certain TESOL certificates are acceptable.
You can't go wrong with CELTA or TRINITY certificate.
When deciding on a TESOL course you should ensure that it includes a supervised practicum, otherwise I doubt it would be acceptable.
As for just having the CELTA alone - well you'd need a degree to go with it. |

Thank you so much for responding to my post! I know there are dozens of TESOL/TESL/TEFL/CELTA questions on this board so I appreciate it.
My apologies; I should have phrased that better. I meant to say if I have my undergrad in English along with my CELTA are enough to be recognized by schools.
The term "TESOL" gets thrown around liberally by for-profit schools seeking prospective students wishing to go abroad and these schools are willing to give a person a "certificate" sometimes under the false pretense that they have learned any type of teaching methodology. That is the case at least where I live. I found a good CELTA program and will be applying soon.
Thanks again! |
