Hello, I am wondering if there are any good volunteer programs that give experience teaching english abroad that provide room and board? China, latin America, anywhere really, the rest of Asia. Im not looking for airfaire or anything, and I understand many of these programs will may require a fee.
I saw i-to-i has a paid internship program in China, but the deadline is too soon for me to sign up now. Anything similar to this?
Thanks, I would like to get into TEFL, but I don't have a degree and would like to test the waters volunteering.
I am looking into TESOL/TEFL courses also, how do I know which courses are best? I am in Canada, BC specifically if that helps.
Thanks, and sorry if these are too obvious of questions.. |

Get your TESL certification and then get a job.
There are still places you can work and get paid even without your degree.
You don't need to pay to volunteer. You won't get rich but you will get experience. |

This organization looks legitimate. I haven't investigated them exhaustively, although I did find a few participant blogs that made it sound like a great experience. They are very willing to connect you to alumni, which is a good sign. |

I am certainly not looking to get rich or any plum position, more for the experience. Do you have any opinions on the better places to go that don't require a degree?
It would make more sense to actually work and get paid than to volunteer if I can get better experience.

Wow that looks great, I'll look into it further.
Also, another question. Is it possible to enter into ESL teaching through work experience as opposed to acquiring a degree? I know that for university or more important positions a higher degree is a must, and I am eventually going to get one. But for instance do employers give more weight to someone with 4 years teaching experience and no degree or to someone with no experience but with a BA?
I am thinking I would like to go out and find a job somewhere that doesn't require a degree, maybe start out volunteering to get my feet wet, and then work towards a distance BA online, how realistic is this?
Thanks! |

If all you want is to do a volunteer stint, that's about all i-to-i is good for. There are certainly other volunteer organizations out there and you should certainly look at those. Decide whether you want to do volunteer work or whether you want to get a job. |
