|

Hi ,
I'm thinking of moving from Japan to UAE. Do I have the right quals?
MA TESOL from a UK uni. 9 years teaching experience in Japan.
WHere can I find the jobs for the UAE? I've tried eslcafes but are there any specific job sites just for ESL in the UAE?
What kind of work could I get and how much would I be able to get?
I'm hoping 40K plus accomodation is that too greedy or doable?
what's living in the UAE like? any other middle east countries you'd recommend? my main objective is to bank as much money as possible. |

Depends. What kind of experience. 9 years means nothing if it was for an Eikaiwa or a dispatch company. Unis want 3 years post-grad tertiary experience.

Google up the websites of the majors...HCT, ZU, UAEU... Apply on-line...

Ahem...look up...
What kind of work could I get and how much would I be able to get?
Again...it all depends on what kind of experience you had in ol' Yamato! It could be lucritive.

Doable...

I dunno...how long is a piece of string?

Any tertiary? If your answer is "No", then so is mine. If you had some kind of state/national certification for teaching the kiddies, then it might be possible to teach at some of the better secondary schools.
Living in the UAE is a blast, I hear. Unlike saudi, they have cinemas, bars, concerts, pork product for non-Muslims and being in close contact with the opposite sex in public without drawing the scrutiny of the regular or religious police. Pretty darned westernized.
But...and this is a BIG "but", one must not make the mistake of forgetting that one is in an Islamic nation and any kind of P.D.A. amongst adults...married or not, is strictly forbidden. A string of recent incidences over the past couple of years have many in the public hopping mad and more than one westerner behind bars. And, these have happened in Dubai, reportedly the most liberal part of the Emirates.
The nationals can be extremely wreckless and bullying on the public highways. But, again, another BIG "but" if you try the well-worn western symbol of using a particular finger to show your emotions, you can be thrown in jail.
And...that's jes' a taste...

Not here it doesn't...to my knowledge... However, working in the industry is counted on for some content teachers, I understand.

Wouldn't be able to help you there, possibly other posters know... Scot?

They vary: Kuwait is like saudi. Qatar is about halfway between saudi and the UAE. Oman seems to be in a class of its own...

NCTBA has hit most of the points. You do have the right academic credentials, but your experience is not exactly what they want... but shouldn't completely exclude you from consideration. If you are applying at universities (certainly the best positions IMHO), you want to emphasize in your application anything that is similar to Academic English... reading, writing, test preparation. Unfortunately, teaching conversation classes isn't helpful as Arab students can talk your arm off and not write a simple grammatical sentence.
There are no boards out there specifically the Gulf/Middle East. In the Gulf, the best bet is to go directly to the websites of the various universities and apply through their employment webpage. You should be able to easily google up the names of the tertiary institutions or pick them out of the various boards here.
If you are looking for a first semester job for this year, you are very late in the game. The vast majority of the hiring is done prior to and at conferences like TESOLArabia and TESOL in the US.

That depends on your point of view, I suppose. Oman has a different history than the rest of the Gulf, has little oil, and a completely different atmosphere. It is a paradise for people who love outdoor activities... hiking, camping, diving... except for the five months of phenomenal heat...
But, the money is the lowest in the Gulf, so it is a trade-off.
I did two stints in Oman... one was my first job in the Gulf and the other was my last. It was definitely my favorite place. But... it now has some of the least desirable jobs in the Gulf outside of Saudi... recruiter hired positions in small towns and villages... you can read all the details on the Oman board.

I don't have as much exp or qual.
Just one year teaching experience at a university in China (finishing second term now)
And a BA in English and a TESL Certificate.
I'll take the advice you gave the person above about googling the major schools, but does someone like me with limited exp and qual stand a chance?
I'd appreciate any advice you could give.

With the major schools... no. And the chances of making over $3000 are very slim.
You are pretty much limited to bottom level Saudi and Oman jobs... Saudi will have higher pay, but likely less pleasant working conditions.

this will sound rude. It isn't ment to be, but it will.
stay in china. Keep teaching college level. Register for an online MA in applied linguistics/TEFL/TESOL and complete it.
After you have 3 to 5 years of university teaching experience and the MA, then check all of the major universities.
With a BA and a TESL cert (a celta? a delta? or just the online tesl cert?) you will be severely limited in what you can pick up. Can you make a living in the UAE with those qualifications? Yes. But it will be extremely tight. STay in china, korea or japan where being a college educated westerner pretty much guarantees you a job, until you get the MA. |

most contracts are 2 to 3 years. And your qualificaitons won't let you make the kind of money you are talking about above.

One of the benefits of working and living here... but not unless you are making decent cash. |

yeah the pay in China sucks right now though.
I'll start looking into Korea and Taiwan.
Thanks, not rude at all.
I won't give up on the Middle East totally, but I was already thinking Korea, Taiwan or Japan might be easier for me.
I want to go somewhere where the pay is higher so I can afford the Masters courses. |
