I've a teacher in New York City for the past 4 years and have managed to keep my job despite cuts because of my unique placement as an ESL teacher in a special education school. I was just wondering how other NY and other teachers in the states were being affected by budget cuts.
One way my school has been affected in an empty supply room. The only supplies I do not have to provide are printer paper and printer cartidges. So I try to keep all receipts when I buy all that out of pocket to max my tax return potential.
Another way is larger classes. My class are supposed to max at 12 kids (with disabilities), a paraprofessional, and a teacher. Some of the classes have 13 and often I end up teaching with no paraprofessional when one is sick (no substitute!). |

I feel ya. I'. also in NYS.
At my school -
No supplies from the school except copies and the occasional thing that I can beg off of the secretary - save those receipts!
12? I also teach ESOL (but not special ed) with no para. Our classes are capped at 28. Ridiculous.
But, like you, I am pretty sure my job is secure next year. Our ESOL numbers keep going up and up. |
