I recently renewed my FM3, and while I didn't request independiente status, I did request an ampliacin de actividades, which allows me to work in the same field on my own. I believe the next step is to register myself with the tax ministry so that I can issue official invoices. This option might be suitable if you wish to continue working for the same school and would like to make some extra cash on the side. |

Thought I'd start a new thread.
My FM3 is due for renewal in May. Please add helpful comments to those already mentioned in this link http://www.mexperience.com/blogs/mexicoinsight/?p=256 ... in English please, as sadly my level of Spanish is still at the cereal box stage.
Let me just add something. Prof Gringo wrote one of the best posts I've ever seen on the subject of working visas here http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=80335 but from what I can see, some of the things he's mentioned will change.
I'm particularly interested in your comments regarding independiente status. I am currently sponsored by one school and I'd like to have more freedom with my (legal) working activities.

Dragonlady |
Thanks! |

Here's a link to a video produced by INM on how to fill out the new forms. They sure pack a lot of detail into it: you may, as I did, find you have to watch it more than once!
http://www.inm.gob.mx/EN/index.php?page/New_FMM
[This link will work, but you may have to use it in a new window.]
For those with an even greater degree of interest, there is this, which restates the new rules.
http://dof.gob.mx/nota_detalle.php?codigo=5129775&fecha=29/01/2010
[If the link doesn't work, you can get to it by following these directions-]
Go to dof.gob.mx; then, in "buscar en el sitio",
type, "criterios migratorios"; then,
click on "Acuerdo por el que se expide el Manual de Criterios y Trmites Migratorios del Instituto Nacional de Migracin" |

This has been in the pipeline for a while...
I did post a cryptic message about this back in 2009, and some posters thought I was blowing smoke.
There's more to come, actually!
The higher-ups (Panistas) in SEGOB/INM would like Pres. Calderon to enact a sweeping immigration reform for Mexico.
There would no longer be FM-3/2 "passport" style books. Those would be replaced by ID cards.
Foreigners would have to apply outside Mexico to have permission to work/study etc in Mexico. No more tourist cards and then applying at a local INM office.
INM offices would no longer interpret the immigration laws. They would be much clearer and much better enforced. So all the INM offices would give the same answers and replys.
Having permission to be in Mexico and work would allow you to work anywhere and for any employer in any capacity. No more of this: Can I please work here?
All this may or may not happen... The PRI and PRD are opposed to much of these reforms. Mexican nationalism at it's finest! |

Just one small request for clarification: I had understood that this is already part of the present reforms; that booklets are being replaced by a stamp in the passport and a separate card like an ID card. |

There's a little confusion regarding this matter. The firm where I work is already having to adjust to these changes. At first immigration told us they would be issuing the ID cards only for new visa applicants, but we have someone whose visa is being renewed, and they requested that he present new photos, which we assume will be put on an ID card. |

Notamiss is right about your being a little behind the times on this one, Prof. Watch the video when you have time, you'll see what she means. |

It appears that the new procedures and cards came into force on 30 April 2010. Great! I renewed earlier in April! Still, one more prrroga, and then I'm done with all that. |

That's right, PhilK, and the new rules were published by the Mexican Government online, at the end of Jan, this year. Opening that second link that I mentioned will give access to the full text. |
