Hey! I have been in S.Korea for 4 years at a private high school
with a 140 hour TEFL and Bachelors in Science.
I am in my mid-50s (53). What are the chances of applying for
a private institutue or university in the Middle East?
Is the pay fantastic or the costs of living too high?
Are there hurdles and hassles involved? Is this too
un-real to achieve. Anyone done the switch and survived?
What is the lifestyle like, ie is drinking allowed, at all?
Where can a person go on weekends for outdoor rec. activities?
Any takers?

I would suggest that you look on the Oman board (and do a search on the Jobs page for the ads). Most universities in the Gulf require a related MA, but Oman has some colleges around the country that will accept your credentials. They are not the best conditions, but read around the board about the various recruiters and learn the good and bad. Some do fine and stay a few years... other wash out quickly.

Oman offers lots of outdoor activities like beaches, camping, and such, and foreign non-Muslim expats can get a "liquor license" that allows them to purchase booze.

The pay in Oman isn't stellar by Gulf standards, but most manage to save a good portion of their salary.

What salary can someone with relevant undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications and one year's experience expect in Oman?

Check the job offered board here. Do a search for Oman. The big problem is that "one" year of experience. If you read the ads, even the recruiters say, BA+Celta+4 years experience post degree. The other ad at the top of the page right now requires 2 years of experience. And note that they are asking for specific experience... at tertiary level.

He really needs to get that first.

You are too old and too little experienced to get a job that would pay enough to make the move satifactory. Why not stay where you are and have a life where you can enjoy the outdoors. I would suggest that you check out CFBT in Brunei and see if you have enough as they like high school experience and it is just down the road from korea.

Because Korea wears you out after a while. I'm looking at getting the hell out of here in the near future, too.
