the telephone conversation/interview i had yesterday made me smile. a public middle school, which is "famous" for its english program, offered me a job.
"part time", 6 forty minute classes per day. pay= 60 kuai per class. that is 8.79 US$ per hour to teach 40 kids.
whadda deal! kids get laowai teacher for 1.5 kuai per student per class.
i took it in good stride and laughed when she told me the $. i told her such was an insult. she (she was good, great sales skills) then ever so politely asked what was the minimum i was willing to take on this urgent vacancy... |

Ugh. Is this in Liaoning? If so, I'm sure they'll give up and eventually fill it with a Russian. |

Teaching in a middle school can be brutal.
Last time I did that I was paid 450 RMB per 45 minute class. 35 to 40 students per class. |

I once taught a middle school in Shandong province and I must say it was my best experience in China to date. I found the kids at this age are not nervous to speak out unlike highschoolers. Once you get them used to the routine of your class it can be very rewarding for everybody. |

My mistake.. I find that the Chinese often say middle school when they really mean high school. The experience that I was referring to is what we would call high school. I do not have any middle school experience. |

i don't know that the chinese mean "high school" when they say "middle school", really. it is a different system than the american one and they are generally referred to as "junior middle school" and "senior middle school". |

A lot of school jobs in Jiangsu offer about 60 RMB for class - most "full-time" positions here in Nanjing are of the 4000 RMB for 15-16 classes variety.
It's fine, really. You can pick up side jobs that pay considerably more. I think most regular teaching jobs are just a good way to get your visa. |
