For those who have experience in both... These two universities offered me a poistion of assistant prodfessorship. Given the same salary and benefits, I would be very glad if you could compare these two institutions and places in terms of:
1) Working atmosphere
2) Living expenses.
3) Degree of shariah implemented (I'd prefer the stricter one).
4) Research opportunities.
5) Job security.
6) Level of respect to the academics.
7) Time contribution (I do not want to be at school from 8 to 4 since I work at nights and through the weekends voluntarily. I hate to be monitored because I am already obsessive with my job.
8- Student type. Rude or good?
9) Car rental prices (if available).
10) Life for Shia? I am allergic to any discrimination.
11) Feminism- so called women right activists. Any of them around...makes me nuts. No offence.
12) People---One criteria: Honest or not?
Thank you very much. |

I don't think that there are many professors here who have taught at both of these places. I have only known 3 EFL teachers who have been at both... and that was many years ago.
If you are allergic to discrimination and feminism -which would seem an obvious and severe dichotomy which would exclude each other - there is a problem... since if one opposes feminism, one thus supports discrimination. Both are universities that are sexually integrated and thus are full of educated and intelligent women, perhaps you need to be in some segregated religious institution so that you can find what you consider students and faculty who are properly indoctrinated to your beliefs. It sounds like Saudi might be the place for you.
While the underclass of Bahrain tends to be Shia, the reputation of the country is that there is discrimination... whether that extends to the university, I can't say. Oman is open-minded as to Muslim sect and many Omanis are Shia, accepted, and successful professionals. But, my women Shia friends there are also pretty strong feminists, so there you go.

I second VS's advice. If you want to be amongst the downtrodden (protected?) women, then saudi is yer lil' ol' Jinnah!
