Is it still possible to find a job in Japan, in person, and then make a run to Seoul to process a work visa?

And why would you want to do that when you can simply get your visa issued at your local immigration office in country.

It's definately the cheaper option. But if you want to visit Korea anyway, go for it.

There's absolutely no reason to do this. You don't need to leave the country anymore.

Yes, it is "still possible" (not sure why you included the word "still"). However, for a few years not, it has not been necessary.

Some employers don't know this and might tell you otherwise. Keep that in mind.

Bottom line: you can "still" come to Japan in person, find a job (not as easy as it sounds), and get a work visa while you are here.

I must be way behind the times. So, a foreigner in Japan on a tourist visa can simply go to an immigration office in Japan to apply for a work visa once they have a sponsor?

It's this last part that gives people the problem.

What happens if I've already been granted a 3 year visa and have it stamped in my passport but decide to quit working for the company I'm with? Will my 3 year visa still be valid?

Just out of curiosity more than anything, I read in the company policy manual that if I quit I automatically get put onto a tourist visa but that sounded a bit suspect to me.

Your company is blatantly lying to you. Nothing happens to your visa and you can have as many jobs as you want on it (in the proper field depending on your visa type)

Not quite. A person in that situation would have (I believe) three months to find a new job. Can't find something in three months then you're supposed to leave Japan. Remember, you can claim unemployment during those three months. Smile

But the rest of what you say (ie. the employer is blatantly lying) is completely true. Very Happy Very Happy

Employers don't know immigration regulations very well. As others have commented, that statement about losing your visa is totally wrong. A person can lose a job in any means (quit, be fired, or be laid off) and still have a valid visa that is good until it expires.

The immigration site says you have 3 months to find another job, and if you are here longer without work technically you need a valid reason.
(see Q17)
http://www.immi-moj.go.jp/english/tetuduki/zairyuu/qa.html
However, there are no immigration cops poring over records to somehow verify that everyone who is in the middle of work is here under the 3 month deadline. I've even seen one guy report on a discussion forum (take it for what it's worth) that he'd been here more than a year without finding work after he lost his job.

Better to be safe than sorry, though.

The employer in question is a VERY large one. They absolutely are not ignorant about the visa regulations, they're flat-out lying.

I wonder if you someone could help, there's an ALT in my area with a situation relevant to this subject.

He has a job, and is working on his tourist visa. The company have applied for his CoE. His tourist visa is going to run out before his CoE comes through. The employer has told him that he has to go to Korea to renew his tourist visa.

Is this correct? If it's not, what should he do? And does anyone know of documentation online to support this if he can sort the situation out while remaining in Japan?

Thanks.

This sounds very suspicious. Have your friend contact immigration directly, and with a Japanese speaking friend if necessary. Some employers pull a con game on unsuspecting teachers just like this. They claim there are delays or problems with the COE/visa processing, and when the person has overstayed their tourist status, they kick them out unpaid, and since they are illegal overstayers who have worked illegally, there is little they can do.

Contact them now. If things are on the up and up and just horribly, terribly, abnormally slow (or if he applied with very little time left on his tourist stay), your friend can get an extension to stay but should not tell immigration he is currently working for that employer!
