Since the rumor is that UAEU will be closing the major portion of its Foundations program in the next few years, they may very well be doing no hiring for next year. I wouldn't count on hearing from them. (they were not aware of this when that ad was run last fall...)

ZU, like most employers in the Gulf, pretty much finishes their hiring in March at TESOLArabia and TESOL in the US. Right now they are likely waiting for acceptances to come in and beginning paperwork. ZU doesn't have many openings each year.

Don't count on either one of them for this coming academic year if you haven't heard anything yet.

Actually, UAEU / UGRU is hiring for the Fall semester! They are hiring 4 new people. The problem really is that the job may be short term if the Foundation programme closes in a year, two, or three.

Only 4??? Shocked

In a system that large, that is a pretty tiny number. I hope that they don't hire anyone bringing school age kids... or at least warned them of the possibilities.

There is only one instructor leaving UGRU this summer, as far as I know.

I know that UAEU teachers have been generally a happy lot the last ten years or so. Cool But, a friend of mine worked in HR not that many years back and the usual numbers annually were 10+ TEFLers... just normal attrition. But... there are English teachers in different departments other than URGU... yes? And the baby boom is still expanding enrollment every year, isn't it? Or has that finally leveled out?

I think that attrition rate has gone down drastically since the two pay increases a couple of years back. However, there have also been budget cuts this year, so I would imagine that they won't be hiring the same numbers that they usually would and rather have instructors take on overtime.

There are English teachers attached to different faculties, but they all fall under the umbrella of UGRU as far as I know.

I am really not sure about enrollment numbers....

There are definitely more than that leaving - for example I can think of a teaching couple who are leaving.

No in fact there are some who teach language skills in the Faculty of Humanities, and others in e.g. Business and Medicine who will shortly have - or who already have - contracts with the Faculty where they work, not with UGRU. That's without counting the people who teach English Literature.

With the projected numbers of students I suspect there'll be a scramble to find a few new teachers for September, or there will be the delights of compulsory overtime, or both.

Doesn't this come under the heading of "some things never change"? Laughing

So who is this mystery colleague on the off? Surely not the caring, sharing, forward thinking, innovating, pension packing Australo-Yank responsible for all the general unhappiness and lack of communication in the department?

The language skills lecturers' contracts are with UGRU, not the Faculty of Humanities.

The language skills lecturers' contracts are currently with UGRU, but shortly (i.e. next semester) some will have contracts transferred to the Faculty of Humanities and the rest of the lecturers will go back to UGRU to teach. In Medicine I think one person teaching ESP has a Faculty contract.

As for people leaving UGRU - personally I know of 4. There must be more - I don't know everybody (or everthing....)
