Well, Uncle Scott, it is not only anywhere in the GCC, it is anywhere in the world, and mainly in America and UK, where the obesity rate is very high!

Statistically and socially speaking, USA has the highest number of Obesity in the world, and according to 2009 Statistics, it is ranked #1 worldwide, and UK (including the town of Uncle Scott! Laughing ) is ranked #3 worldwide!

I do not know what Uncle Sam and McDonalds are putting in their food which is causing more than 50 millions American to be obese, and causing high rate of obesity?

Dear 007,

My goodness - not a single Gulf or even Arab country on that list.

Hmm - perhaps this might explain it:

Showing latest available data. (my highlight added.)

Does this mean most teachers get fat too? Is there much choice of food to eat in the gulf states? Is it easy to buy fresh fruit and vegetables?

I don't know about "fresh" but you can find veggies in supermarkets. They may actually be fresher at the souk, though...

I found the veggie choice to be more extensive, fresher, better tasting, and cheaper than the US.

Again, as predicted, 007 would rather stick his head in the sand.

www.nationmaster DOT COM? Really?

Here is some proper data:

http://www.iotf.org/database/index.asp

Did you even read the article? The link I posted is from there. As is this:

Quote:
According to the International Association for the Study of Obesity, Qatar ranks sixth globally for prevalence of obesity and has the highest rate of obesity among boys in the Middle East and North African region. A recent article in the Qatari newspaper Al Watan said that local health experts predicted that within five years, 73 percent of Qatari women and 69 percent of the men would qualify as obese.

The International Diabetes Federation ranks Qatar fifth globally in terms of the proportion of people aged 20 to 79 with diabetes.

You can get fresh fruits and vegetables pretty much anywhere in the world. Those numbers are not due to lack of availability of fruits and vegetables (because there is no lack), but due to overabundance of food (read: rice), money, and the pervasive fast food culture of recent.

You can see this anywhere these days... pictures of obese kids in Shanghai and Tokyo are becoming more and more common (they look too cutely weird!). The young are ditching their traditional diets and switching to McD, KFC, BK, etc. And in the Gulf countries? Even their traditional diet is very heart-attack, obesity, and diabetes inducing (greasy oily rice and white bread with meat).

I have no doubt in my mind that the Gulf Arab countries will win the race and be at the top of obesity, diabetes, and heart-disease lists in the next few years.

No, it's not, especially not the choice.

You can only speak for yourself... I stand by my opinion. Veggies in the US - in both states that I live in - are usually over priced, completely tasteless, but very pretty copies of actual vegetables.

It is only for a short couple months in the summer when I am able to get a very limited variety of fresh farmer's market vegetables... which are obscenely over-priced, but actually have a taste.

It is the big ag business that is the cause of the problem, starting with high fructose corn syrup that is put into everything including broths and meats! Next come the chemical flavorings. Also, in America everyone is worried about their kid getting kidnapped and raped or killed so no one lets them outside and they sit inside in front of the PC or video games. With Mom's too busy to care, this situation has reached a crisis.
OH YEAH, we have no real public transportation and everyone in the US has to do every single trip by car, hence everyone has expanded waist lines.

Actually the situation with the Arabs is similar to the situation with the Native Americans. We have two originally nomadic cultures with generations of feast and famine... and now that they both have access to plenty of unhealthy choices, they are paying the price with obesity and diabetes at rates many times the average American or European. ...a similar genetic link in there...

You must be talking about some hamlet in the plains or desert, VS. There is absolutely no comparison to the Emirates. Houston has not only vast Hong Kong supermarkets, Vietnamese supermarkets and so on, but the regular ones have better selection than anywhere else including (definitely including) Europe. There are also huge organic markets, and the standard Krogers and so on have separate health stores-within-the-store. In the Emirates you can shop adequately at Spinneys and Carrefour. You go a mere 50 minutes north to RAK and the Carrefour there is missing half the stuff available at the Dubai ones! That shows you how pathetic the distribution system is. I was way underwhelmed.

This is not to mention the universal Middle East rule: If you find a product you like, it will promptly disappear from the shelves for a minimum of six months. Even veggies, all but the common, low-quality ones I get here, the miserable cucumbers that look like my thumbs (ok, a little bigger) and wretched grade-C tomatoes that would NEVER be sold in the States. Reality time, VS!

In all my years and of everyone I know, you are the first and only person who claimed that the crap sold in US supermarkets was better than in the Middle East. I've lived in my small rural town, the suburbs of Washington DC and the suburbs of Phoenix.

They all sold crap... which was green, red, and yellow... and tasted like the containers they came in... To get anything with a taste, one had to go to specialty stores and pay a price equal to the rate for gold... and half the time, it was/is still inedible.

But... we're off topic again SnB Laughing
