Hi Everybody,

Here's another question:

I don't have my BA Honours in English and Sociology and a TESOL-like certificate yet. I don't graduate until April, 2004 and I don't expect any pieces of paper until June.

Could all this be working against me when I apply for jobs?

If so, should graduate first, or at least wait until I've totally finished school at the end of April to apply?

Could the fact that I don't want to start until late August to September also be a factor? (i.e. have I started to apply to soon?) Rolling Eyes

Thanks! Very Happy

To legally work in China you usually need a bachelor degree. You do not need a TESOL like certificate although it is helpful. However, I have heard of a few older folks wihtout bachelor degrees that have been given work visas because of their life experience but never young folk. You don't actually need the actual degree as long as your university can verify in writing that you have fulfilled the requirements.

Applying before getting your degree shouldn't be a serious
problem, but many schools can't begin processing you until
after then, so may just be putting your application on the
back burner (or ignoring it). It's not exactly out of sight,
out of mind, but many schools focus on their immediate
needs.

Some of them need a teacher "last week", but don't start
looking until "next month" or until teachers taking up the
slack complain and either quit or threaten to quit, then they
need several teachers immediately.

As a result, you can probably get some kind of job nearly
any time, but that's usually an emergency and who knows
what you will walk into. Most likely, it will be someone
else's mess.

Some of the larger schools have a more predictable workload
and turnover rate and can give you some idea of whether they
will need someone in the Summer or Fall.

Most will, since so many teachers fulfill (or break) a contract
around those times and move on.

The larger schools have to plan a little more, but the
general rule is that most schools don't reallly count on
you until you arrive. And even then most don't really
count on you to stick around.

This isn't so much a "real" answer to your question as
it is a reminder that things aren't as well organized
here as they would be in a typical western organization,
so you shouldn't think too hard about what's happening
behind the scenes.
