Do I have any regrets that I spent so much of my adult life TEFLing in barbarous parts of the World ?

Too early to tell.

I hope that you don't have any regrets. Many do not have the opportunity or desire to do what you and others here have done. It is comendable to spend so much time in foreign places and going through so much. On that note, what places have you taught? Just curious.

Detroit? Wink

No regrets here in my 10th year abroad, all in Mexico. There's always going to be something though; a trade off. Not being able to see family as often as I would like for example.

So what made you stay for long in Mexico? Have all those years been "en D.F o otros estados?"

You can, eventually, make a good living in lots of places in Mexico. I also have lived in Mexico City for many years, and make something between an OK and a good living. If you have a degree in Education, a TEFL certificate and 3 or 4 years experience you can do quite well, but you earn every penny (or peso, as it were) of it. Also, I think if you try to base your standard of living on how you would live in the States, you might not think so, for example, living in a trendy area, eating out a lot, coffee at Starbucks every day, etc., but if you live in a "normal" middle class neighborhood, and live like a middle class Mexican lives you can usually enjoy some perks you'd never have in the States (or UK, Australia, et el) like household help, fairly frequent vacations, things like that. I think you eat far better on far less money, much more fresh fruit and veggies for a fraction of what they'd cost in most other places.

I'll pretty much second what Teresa says...

The food, the weather, the job, the people...all aces in my books. Mostly DF, with some time spent living in Guadalajara and Acapulco as well.

Cool title to your post! I have become acquainted with kicking against the pricks too. When the chips are down what else is left?

Dear scot47,

Je ne regrette rien (thanks, Edith.)

From: http://lyricstranslate.com
No, nothing at all,
No, I don't regret anything!
Neither the good that's been done to me,
Nor the bad;
It's all the same to me!

No, nothing at all,
No, I don't regret anything!
It's been payed for,
swept (away),
Forgotten.
I don't care about the past!

With my memories
I have lit the fire!
My disappointments, my pleasures,
I no longer need them.
Swept away are the loves
with their trembling,
swept away forever!
I start again at zero.

No, nothing at all,
No, I don't regret anything!
Neither the good that's been done to me,
Nor the bad;
It's all the same to me!

From: http://lyricstranslate.com

If I regret the past, I can't enjoy or like the present.

Regards,
John
