I put this question in the Latin America section too. These are the two areas that I am interested in.
Where in the world can a guy with no real teaching credential, but 10 years teaching experience get a good job? I have taught English to adult immigrants for years in LA. I only have the Ryan Single Subject Credential that I got in order to teach Adult School. I was basically given that just for having a BA in art. Should I go to a TEFL course? I have traveled a lot. I could not take the food in Ecuador and the Philippines after two months. We are all snobs in some ways and I am being honest. This isn't a job interview after all. I love Thai food, but I am not sure I can take the heat and humidity. I speak some Spanish and would consider Mexico, Uruguay, Colombia, etc. It would be nice to improve my Spanish. Also I would consider Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, etc. Maybe Brazil too. Even if I do narrow it down to a single country, I still have to decide a city. Bogota is cool and wet and possibly dangerous and depressing. I don't know. I just want a tiny room with a bed and bath. Guadalajara sounds nice, but I don't know if I will get work that pays enough to live on there. Monte Video sounds nice, but I don't know if I could get a job there before March. Chiang Mai sounds nice, but overrun with English teachers. Is it? It takes me two months to adjust to the time change in Asia, so that has to be considered (I'll try some serious sleeping pills this time). I might not have the money to hang out that long. I won't be working as of June. I only have two thousand dollars because my money is tied up in real estate. I don't want a job that includes doing office work for the company. I am a very slow office worker. Of course, I'm not talking about lesson planning or paper grading, but one lady told me I would have to teach early in the morning and at night then spend unpaid hours answering phones, filing, etc. during the middle of the day. I want to teach about twenty two hours a week. I am not a socially outgoing person, so I dread endless job searching. I am very good in class though. In reality, I have never had a problem getting work. Maybe I'm too worried. Who knows? I am nervous, but I really want to do this. Please, help.

What are your long term goals Rorito de Ranchito?

You do not want to do any admin. work, but want to 'teach'? Laughing You have been working for the past 10 years but only have US$2000 saved? You are not working now? That sounds as if you live with family.

I suggest that you do not have enough cash to head out on your own. I suggest that you are not being realistic. I suggest that you need to speak with your family and work out a deal where you get a job in your area and spend some money to earn at least a CELTA/TESOL Cert. That will give you some bargaining power when looking for work overseas. It is very competitive at the moment since qualified teachers (read 'real teachers') are in the job market, not just people who did some part-time volunteering with immigrants, as fantastic as that experience was.

good luck.

Idea Don't accept the first job that comes along while you're in your desperate state.

Would you care to describe what a good job is to you?

Your experience is commendable and immensely supplements the BA.

Wouldn't hurt.

That stands you in good stead, too. Many employers are worried about their teachers suffering from too much culture shock.

I find this hard to imagine.

Not a good sign. You're not going to choose a place like Japan (where I am, and where your qualifications are suitable). I can only repeat the question posed by Serious_Fun: how is it possible to have such low funds after working for 10 years?

Teach but do no office work? You'd better stay where you are and find other work. More than half of teaching is paperwork, IMO. I'm not talking about how much time is needed, but in what duties are necessary.

Minimal hours for entry level jobs, but you must realize that plenty of jobs require far more time in classrooms.

This has nothing to do with teaching, but what you do with coworkers and in private. I have some bad feelings about your self-description at this point. Not all teachers have to be outgoing, but overall you do not paint a good picture of yourself. I can't imagine how you'd do in an interview.

You need to get a handle on what teaching abroad is like and realize that you can't always have your cake and eat it.

Being good in a classroom is only part of the job of teaching.

For now, I'd say stay home, consider more what you can tolerate for working conditions, and reconsider where you want to live. Then see what it costs to live there, what the market is for someone with your experience, and what it will take to find/get a job there. Above all, have patience.

Looking at your post in the LA forums, you paint a bleak picture of yourself, and I would not want to be your coworker.

Given your pickiness about climate and food, wanting a girl in every port, unwillingness to do office work in an office career like teaching, I'd say stay in L.A. and tutor.

Hiya

You do sound in a bit of muddle and I have to agree with the previous post that you do seem a bit picky, but from what you say about yourself, you are not really in a position to be too choosy when looking for employment.

However, you do have a degree, which is now a pre-requisite for almost any job! My advice would be to get a CELTA or a decent TEFL qualification. A proper face to face one with observed teaching practice. Not an online one! It might be a good idea to find a school - possibly an International House, in a country that you would be interested to work in, to do the CELTA, then you will have some experience of the place before deciding if you want to work there. For example, IH Almaty in Kazakhstan does CELTAs, and am sure would be interested in having you stay on and work there.

Once you have your CELTA/TESOL and with your degree and experience, than you really can take your pick. As with everything, it is supply and demand. If you want to go to China, you can probably work at a Uni, teach only a few hours a week, and earn enough to have a very good lifestyle. If you want to go to Bali, you'll earn just enough money to get by.

Good luck.

boysfromtheblackstuff,

I know I sound picky. I am in some ways and not at all in others. Thank you for your thoughtful reply. Your information is useful and I will consider the CELTA course seriously.
