If I had a penny for every other Thai/Viet/HK post, I'd be somewhat rich. Yet hardly ever...and I mean that-----have I seen a Malaysia query, quip or question. IS THERE ANY GOOD REASON FOR THIS, OR IS IT A SHEER ROLL OF THE DICE RANDOM FLUCTUATION PHENOMENON? |

Yeah, there is a dearth of posts regarding Malaysia. BTW, I will reply to your PM, but am out of country right now. Next day or two.
There are ESL jobs in Malaysia, but few people living here are posting obviously. Don't know why. |

I had plenty of questions about Malaysia before I accepted a job there, but a definite dearth of replies
Odd, or perhaps everyone there is so content there is no need to offer/request online support
(That's what I'm hoping!) |

The TESL/TEFL industry in Malaysia is not as large as other countries for several reasons:
1) Malaysia's population is smaller than most East Asian and other SE Asian countries, only around 27 million.
2) English was widely taught and used up until these past two generations. Most Malaysians above the age of 40 were taught in English-medium schools. It is only the younger people that have gone through the Malay-medium schools, or else the Mandarin- and Tamil-language schools. Still, there are private schools that choose to focus upon English, and these students do quite well.
3) Many Malaysians are being trained in TESL/TEFL, thus negating the need for foreign teachers. For example, in my school all of the English classes are taught by Malaysians. (I teach content subjects myself in Malay.) It doesn't matter that these teachers cannot really carry on a conversation in English; the window-dressing of having locals teach English is what is important, not the lack of success in student competence.
4) There are definitely fewer private language schools than in China or South Korea. These tend to be dodgy establishments (aren't they all), and pay fairly poorly. The only exceptions are the British Council and maybe 1 or 2 others. Those are the prime positions, and are heavily competed for. |
