Hey everyone,
What's your opinion on a contract that specifies a base salary considerably below the advertised salary with the remaining portion made up in bonuses? To be fair it seems like the bonuses are very easy to get assuming the teacher isn't incompetent but I'm hesitant to give so much power like that to a school. Has anyone else ran into a contract like that?
Thanks! |

My advice:
When in China, assume nothing! If the contract is written in this way, it is 99.99% certain that they are deceiving you. Even the simplest performance target can become your downfall if they want it to be.
For instance, you may receive a deduction in pay because "a student complained". Some students always complain because it is in their nature to do so.
I'll say no more other than your hesitance could be well warrented. |

yeah my contract states the a summer bonus is on condition that the teacher receives an average of 80% on evaluations made by co-teachers, students, and parents.. in 2 years no one has mentioned anything about the evaluations and every teacher no matter how bad has received the bonus..
I thought it was pretty shifty at first, but my school is pretty trustworthy so its not an issue for me anymore.. that being said.. without knowing the school I wouldnt count on the getting that money.. they maybe pulling a fast one
FAO"oh sorry you misunderstood.. the bonus is only paid at the end of the year"
(9months later)
FAO "will you be signed another contract for next year?"
Teacher "No I will return to ...."
FAO"sorry to speak to you that your teaching has been not great we will not be paying you any bonus"
Teacher"WTF"
FAO "oh i forgot to mention the boss would likey you to teach his son part-time after school he really love u teaching style"
Teacher"WTF"
FAO"oh you see its some other big boss in a different city that doesnt know ur name and never watched you teach he no like and that think u not get the bonus... sorry no i dont have his contact information.. have a happy everyday" |

Just politely explain that you understood the base salary to be X RMB, and unfortunately, you wont work for less than that amount. Thank them and move on.
The ball is then in their court. |
