Hi!
Is there a chance for a Non-native English Speaker to become an ESL Teacher? I have a 7.5 IELTS band score and I'm planning to take up TEFL Certification either China or Thailand next month. Will it be hard for me to get employed? Please share your experiences and feedback. Thanks! |

I know lots of people who aren't native teachers and have ESL jobs here. I think you cannot be quite as picky about where you work and you are likely going to have to work for a recruitment company. But I know many people, mainly Filipinos/Filipinas, who work here and who aren't native speakers. They all have residence permits, Z visas, etc. I also know an Egyptian, a Nepalese, and a guy from Kyrgistan who work here as ESL teachers. I met a guy in Beijing who was making 11k a month teaching kindergarten. He was from Portugal and his English was not particularly good. He was very tall and good looking though. So it's definitely possible but your working conditions may not be the best. |

Of course, its just harder. My Malaysian CELTA instructor advised the non-natives in our class to call the employer in question, so they can hear your high level of English. |

i know several non-native speakers who teach here. you will find work, just don't expect to be paid the same amount as a native speaker. |

I'm a non-native speaker of English.
I have worked on nothing but Z-visas/residence permits.
I've been picky on where i want to work and i now have one of the better ESL-employers in Beijing.
Expect the same salary as that of a native-speaker.
What it boils down to is having a good attitude and ambitions.
Once you get recommendations, the road is paved for you. |
