After I receive all my papers to process the Z visa, how long do I have to use them?
I may have them as early as mid June for a September start. But I'm not close to Hong Kong and I don't want to go down there until mid-August, or about a week before my current F visa expires.
Do the Z papers have a limit to them before they can't be used? Certainly there must be some kind of time frame, you'd think. Does anyone know what it is?
Well I'd appreciate any responses. Thanks in advance. |

The Visa Issuance letter includes the start and end date of intended employment. The letter must be used to obtain the visa prior to the start date listed on the letter - it is, of course, invalid after the start date. |
Thank you sir. That is good news.
So in fact what could happen is that you could get a Z visa for more than a year? What if the start and end date of the employment is Sept 1, 2010 to Aug 31, 2011? You get your papers end June 2010 and process the visa. Does that mean your Z runs from the time you enter the country - say July 1, 2010, all the way to Aug 31st 2011? That's a year and two months.
I thought Z's were good for one year and one year only. |

You are working with two dates.
The first date is when you get your Z visa pasted into your passport by the Chinese Embassy. That is your window to enter China, it is usually 90 - 180 days.
The second date is the date your z visa is valid. That is 30 days after you enter China. Usually it is entered as "000" on your visa.
During those 30 days your employer needs to process your Z visa into an FRP (Foreign Residence Permit) which is usually good for one year and also serves as a multi-entry visa to leave and enter China at will. |

I've never seen a contract that ran from 1 September to 31 August, at least not at a university. Those contracts usually expire before 15 July so the scenario you present above (a Z visa/residence permit extending over 14 months) is very unlikely. Private language schools may be different and have longer contracts but I've never worked at one of them so I can't say. But if you stay at the same job for a second year then the residence permit will be extended another year.

Yes, the Z visa is good for only 30 days. It is used ONLY to enter the country. In a practical sense, your Z visa is void once used to enter the country. It will be issued with a 30 day expiration. |
You're right about this part, the Z visa is used only to enter China and expires 30 days after entry, within which period it needs to be converted into a residence permit.

That means, from the day you are given/issued your Z visa, you have 30 days to enter the country. If you don't get to China in that time, your Z visa expires, and you'll have to get a new visa to then enter China. |
Unless things have changed recently, you're wrong on this one. Once the Z visa is issued you have at least 90 days in which to enter the country before that Z visa becomes null and void. Teatime of Soul already pointed this out.

This part I don't fully understand. When advertised, these jobs say "1 year at a university". Then I see the contract, and it shows what you have described. If it is a one year job, then how do you deal with things like housing?
Do they just tell you to leave before July? You only get 10 months of pay? I have been turning down offers because I don't know the details, and for some reason in China neither recruiters or universities want to tell me information on this. They think I am just complaining. |

in most cases it's a 10-11 month contract
usually ending June 30th or July 31st
You'll be able to stay in your apartment about 2-3 weeks after classes end, usually till around the middle or end of July |

it's one academic year, not a calendar year.
if you stay for a second year, then your residence permit will simply be renewed a week before it expires. No need to leave the country. as for the pay, if your school pays you over the summer (some do, some don't) then your summer pay (sometimes full, sometimes half salary) begins on the day your current contract expires, and your regular salary for the new contract begins again on 1 September. As for housing, if you stay at the same school a second year, you just stay in the same apartment.
If you quit after one year, then the post above mine explains it well enough. |

I am currently in possession of a Z visa which began on 2009:12:15 and expires on 2011:02:15.
I'm sure other people have had similar experiences - horses for courses!! |
