After passing over parts of the Yucatan Peninsula, it looks like Karl will pass over the Gulf of Mexico and come ashore as a Category 3 hurricane. most likely between Cabo Rojo and Nautla, Veracruz. It's supposed to happen tomorrow morning. Take care of yourself, Dragonlady.

Have you put together your 'hurricane kit' yet, or is there time in the morning? Water, wine, tequila (medicinal purposes, of course) .......the essentials! Hope it blows out before it gets to you, but if not, try to keep dry.

Too bad about the cigarettes, but at least you still have an internet connection. Let us know how your day goes . . .

Some photos of the early effects of Karl.

They're saying Mexico City may see some flooding from this hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center website is a reliable source to check, if you are following warnings, satellites, etc. This is the one we keep a close eye on all season. Here is a link to Karl's 5 day forecast, but the best way is to read the "discussion" and "public advisory" (links near the top) which is updated several times a day as the storm progresses. That's the most accurate information, as the situation can change very quickly.

The DF government is asking people to stay inside Saturday and Sunday as they expect heavy wind and rain this weekend. I've never seen that for DF before as hurricanes usually die out before getting way up in the hills here.

Thanks for the warning, Guy. Nuts, I had a special class planned with one of my students at the Franz Mayer. Looks like we may have to postpone it.

Hopefully the worst is over for you, there. Here is a projection map from CNN news, stating it hit shore as a Cat 3, but is now a Cat 2. Looks like MORE rain is headed for the west coast. Zihua and area have just been soaked this tropical storm season. All they need is more rain and flooding.

Anyone who was in the area affected in 2005 will remember Hurricane Stan http://weather.terrapin.com/wx/DisplayStorm.jsp?STORM=01350&dtype=JAVA

It was farther south of DF than Karl is expected to be, but we did get about 2 days of rain, moderate but non-stop. No wind, though. The directly affected areas farther south suffered a great deal of damage and loss, many areas not directly from the hurricane, but from the larger system that it was a part of.

I would expect that what happened then is a good prediction of what we are in for now, but shifted somewhat northward; for example in DF we will get heavier and more rain than with Stan.
