I knew a handful of people who ran their own Eikaiwa schools who had been entrenched in Japan for 10 or more years. They seemed to have varying degrees of success depending on their location. I'm thinking toward the future right now, but I'm wondering if anyone has experience either stringing part time work together or owning their own company. I understand the market is bleak now, just wondering for the future.

Any thoughts?

Please read through threads before you start another one. Just last week, someone asked much the same question you did - http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=81193

Here's another useful link.
http://livinginfo.gaijinpot.com/starting-a-business-in-japan

Don't ignore the links on the right side of the screen when you go there, too. Just beware of flamers if you post in the discussion forum.

In a previous post you said you had been here only one year and were thinking of coming back. Imagine the competition you're going to face. It'll be steep, even in small towns. Perhaps even more so there!

Go into this thinking as a real businessperson. And, know the laws needed for the right visa and how to run the business.

Sorry I double posted a topic. I usually check the forum at work in my downtime, so I'm just kind of scanning the first page. I'll be careful not to do that anymore.

I'm looking at this as an option waaaaaay down the road. Nothing anytime soon. I think if I did start a school, it wouldn't be a traditional Eikaiwa. I'd have some kind of gimmick to hook people in. Plus, I'd have part-time work to keep me afloat if I did that.

Thanks for the links and I'll post on the original topic from now on. Sorry, I'm new here.
