I am looking at retirement in a year or two. To my surprise I qualified for a secure tenancy from a Housing Association in my native Scotland. Easier than I thought. I applied, was offered a choice of two tenancies on my last visit.

I signed on the dotted line and now I am the tenant of a very nice 54 sq m apartment on an island in the Clyde Estuary. Reasonable rent too.

Forget all that tosh about owning property !

If you would like some guidance on how to get yourself a pied-a-terre in Caledonia, let me know.

Congratulations! I wonder if America will be offering any similar schemes when it's my time... Laughing Not bloody likely, I suppose.

Where to retire indeed? I still have 12 years to go but am thinking about that more seriously due to the direction America is moving both economically and culturally. Of all the places I have lived/worked in, I was the happiest in the Republic of Georgia but am not sure about its stability in the long run. Oh well, the search will continue . . .

According to certain Obama haters, Obama is a socialist, so maybe we're halfway to a socialist government already!

Dear Isia Guapa,

While many of the the Obama-dislikers call him (among other, less polite, names) a "socialist," many who were previously Obama-likers think he's just the "same-old, same-old."

Interesting, isn't it, how he seems to be p*issing almost everyone off but for entirely different reasons.

Now were I a philosophical adjudicator, I might derive some profound observation from that.

Regards,
John

Dear Johnslat,

You'll always be a valid philosophical adjudicator in my book, so your observations on this matter will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Marsha

Scot - How did you qualify for that? Have you been paying into the UK system for all these years?

Hopefully within the next 10 years I can throw the towel in and put my feet up in Turkey. I disagree with you Scot about home ownership, thats the key to peaceful and secure retirement, that and not having to worry about heating bills 9 m0nths of the year!

Mark

"Social Housing", which is the new euphemism for housing in the public sector is no longer run by councils. Public sector housing stock was handed over to housing associations some years ago. Anyone over 16 can apply for housing. Contributions to National Insurance is not a factor.

Send me a PM if you wish to discuss further or if you have questions about how to proceed. I can give advice on how the system works in Scotland. If you are unfortunate enough to be looking on the other side of the border, I cannot help.

Repairs ? Who will fix your windows when they fall out ? I just phone my landlord. Home ownership is a nonsense.

Dear scot47,

Congrats on your new pad! Long may you enjoy it.

Any tips on how to become Scottish? I have some Scottish heritage, am drinking a single malt as we speak, and enjoy frying things that most of the world wouldn't have ever thought of- that's gotta count for something, right?

Smile
Justin

Those called Justin are debarred from Scottish citizenship. Likewise, Nigel, Horace, Cecil and Algernon.

If you learn how to speak like Sean Connery we might make an exception.
