Why would a school request that a teacher apply for a Z multiple visa, when within 30 days the teacher would have the ability to exit and enter multiple times using his/her Resident Permit? |

Please read the web and forums.
A Z visa is a ONE time use thing - it simply allows you entry into the country ONCE then, in a practical sense, it's void. A resident permit is what allows you to remain in the country and have multiple entries. |
Thanks for your reply, it is very much appreciated. I agree with you that what you say would make sense, however, as stated in my question it is not me that thinks there is a Z multiple (can you confirm categorically that there is no such visa available anywhere in the world?) but it is my school that requested that I get one. Why would they request I get something that doesn't exist and would be superseded by a resident permit for foreigners? |

Perhaps they are giving you the information that they've always used and haven't bothered to update the information that they give prospective employees. |

OK, thanks for your reply. I take it from your reply that at some stage in the past Z multiple visas were issued but are no longer issued. Is that what you mean? If so, when did they stop issuing them? |

Taken from this website: http://www.uibe.cn/om/english/yszx.html
According to this website a Z multiple exists (unless the website is out of date) but it states "generally valid for a single entry" as well as "must apply for a Registration of Temporary Residence and for a Z Multiple-entry Visa" suggesting that they are rarely given before arriving but given after arriving.
Z visa (renzhi) work visa
This is what you want. The Z visa allows the bearer to work full-time in China with a Chinese or foreign company, school or other entity. This initial Z visa granted before you arrive is generally valid for a single entry and for a three-month stay. After arriving in China, Z visa holders must apply for a Registration of Temporary Residence and for a Z Multiple-entry Visa. Note that the residence permit is no longer issued as a separate document (i.e. the little green book) but is now simply a sticker affixed to the Z visa. To apply youll need completed Foreigner visa and Residence Permit Application forms affixed with your companys seal, a health certificate (first-time applicants only) and a passport photo. Youll need to show your marriage certificate to obtain a visa for our spouse and birth certificates for your children. |

Yes, that info is out-of-date. The FRP sticker replaces the Z-visa entirely. Your FRP then allows you to come and go as you please.
The initial Z-visa now means that you've been invited to come to China for work. It's a single-entry visa (30 days) in which time your employer is to apply for your work permit (FEC for teachers) and your residence permit. F and L visas still have 1, 2 or mulitple re-entries. |

Thanks for that. What if the employer claims to already have applied for the work permit and is sending it to apply for the Z visa? Can the work permit be issued before the Z visa? |

To work legally in China an employer:
obtains a work permit
then obtains the visa issuance letter, then sent to you to obtain the Z visa
then upon arrival in China you get a resident permit
So, yes, they already obtained the work permit well prior to your getting the visa |
Thank you for that. I was told it was a work permit from the Foreign Expert Bureau rather than a Foreign Expert Certificate. Is the work permit alternatively named an FEC or is that a different document that I will get upon arrival? |
