On this subject I'm interested in hearing from anyone presently or formerly teaching English in the state of Oaxaca. I'm getting ready to go to Oaxaca City for a volunteer job in July and will only be there a month, but I've been wanting to go there for years and really badly for the last two years or so.

My own reason for going there is mainly the people. I really only passed through there on the train forty something years ago, but I've had a lot of ESL students from there here in California and I've always been impressed with their humility, their dignity and their intelligence.

On several other threads, comments have been made about the quality of schools, the pay, the benefits, safety issues, the climate, the weather and many other reasons for going to or staying in a place. What about Oaxaca?

Why did I come to Oaxaca?
Well, 12 years ago when I arrived I had prearranged my job which happened to be in Oaxaca. I also had a fairly sure thing lined up in Mexico City, but 1, I'm not a city person, and 2, the pay was much better at the job I took.

Why have I stayed in Oaxaca for 12 years?
I fell in love, with an individual, but also with the state. Now, I'm absolutely throughly addicted to it. They'd have to pull me out of here kicking and screaming. Oaxaca City is nice, but there are so many things to spend money on there. The state in general is so rich. Rich in natural beauty, rich in culture, rich in climates, rich in history. I don't see myself ever getting tired of it.

Having said that--I do see that it's not for everyone. In the past I've be accused of providing too glowing of a report. I don't want to give the impression that it's for everyone, it's not.

So what's the job market like for English teachers in Oaxaca City?

It's evolving. But still mostly hourly semester by semester work. I did recently hear of a private uni looking for a full time native speaker.
