I probably posted this before.
I've heard that you can sometimes manage to find jobs at hotels in the resort areas. Any words of wisdom on how to go about this? |

On the ground.. connections, connections, networking, connections.
Occasionally you find adverts on places like ajarn for PT work of this nature but usually, connections.

No, there is not a heap of work in this line. Partly because--
Now is low season/rainy season. Resort hotels are largely depleted, although some do a 3 day for 2 deal which Thais may take up.
The financial crisis PLUS the Thai reds crisis has really hit tourism. Double whammy. Even in the high season it will take time to come back.
I remember seeing a 'mobile school' which went around hotels to teach, but it went down because no work. The guy tried to sell it.
As a general rule, the hotel work was not well paid, and sometimes the hours are odd---like, the chambermaids' basic course would be at 4pm because they are busy all day, etc etc. Sometimes, the teacher would work weekends. Sure, there were some good jobs, like the Hiltons, but like hens' teeth. In those jobs, you would also be hit up for translating and editing the hotel's letters and stuff, and in some places you became a dogsbody. Many hotels would contract out to a school, anyway.
Occasionally, Health Spas used to employ a teacher for the staff, but we seem to see fewer ads now.
I get a few emails from people who say "Eddy, where can I teach while making love on the beach all day under palm trees drinking cocktails?" These poor guys have seen too many movies about Thighland. The "work in hotels on the beach" thang is a similar dream. Thais work eachother very hard, and sometimes work us westerners harder because we expect a nice condo and 50,000b a month. I did know of one hotel teacher who earned half that and lived in a tiny room near the kitchens.
There is no such thing as a free lunch (or even an easy half lunch) in Thailand, and everybody should realise that.

Eddy, you need to stop being so subtle and give it to 'em straight! |
