I've never been in Saudi... but I'd bet no... as this has always been one of the stated negatives here about going and working on what is, in effect, an illegal visa status.

I have a relative in Riyadh who is working in a big university and told me never to come on a business visa because of so many reasons. One of which was nto being able to open up a bank account. If you have a family back home that you will be supporting, you would be in a bad spot. |

you can still send money back home to your account or family via money transfer outfits. |

I've read on this forum that some people have been able to send home money without an iqama, but I don't recall anyone ever being able to open a bank account without one. I myself had to send money home via one of the transfer operations, but someone else (a Saudi citizen) had to do it for me. At least according to others on this forum, in some places that kind of transfer is possible without the difficulty that I had.
In any case, it's a big pain, and one that you would prefer to skip if possible. |

It does depend on circumstances to some extent. If you are coming for a very short term position... say for 6 months, it can be acceptable. That posh place KAUST is bringing a number of people in on short term visas, but their salaries are being direct deposited to their home country bank automatically plus their expense accounts locally paid in cash.
As Scot47 always says... know your master.

While working in Korea, I knew of a Canadian teacher on a six month visitors visa working for a school. She could not wire money our of the country since she was illegal. For this reason, she kept her cash her apartment -owned by her employer. When she was about to leave, everything was stolen.
Her boss was kind enough to have warned her that since she was working on the wrong visa , she would be in more trouble if she were to call the authorities to report the theft.
I am only speaking of Korea, but you can imagine what could happen in KSA. |
