I am nearly ready to sign up for a job in Zhongshan and like many people that are going to China for the first time this visa story has got me a little perplexed.
The guy I'm in correspondence with at the school is telling me to get an L visa and then go to HK and apply for an F visa. I'm just a little worried that I might come unstuck at this point. I've arrived as a tourist and then found a job ? I don't want to be on a plane back out again having had my application turned down.
I've been given information that as a British passport holder I can arrive in HK without a visa, is this true?
If that is so, I can then go to the office that the school runs there and make my F visa application.
At least that way I haven't had to lie to anyone about my intentions.
Anybody out there like to comment on this?
Is it a viable route into China,or are there any hidden pitfalls with this approach?

You won't get an F visa without the official invitation letter from the school.

If the school is unwilling/unable to sponsor your Z visa from the get-go, you're in for a world of hurt.

I second that. There are still many legitimate employers looking for qualified teachers.

Yes, UK citizens can go to Hong Kong without a visa and stay 180 days (90 days for US citizens). BUT don't go down the F visa path. It requires some "truth bending" and you will have even fewer rights than "real" visa holders. Which ain't much.

You don't need anything to get a six-month, M entry F visa in Hong Kong. If you stay at a hostel near Chungking Mansions in Tsim Tsa Tsui on the Kowloon peninsula, you can find many visa agents who can do it for you. I personally had to do it to take a summer Chinese course because the school sent my letter of invitation to my hometown while I was in China.

Anyway, I think the name of the agent I used is "World Wide Visa Services," and it cost about 80 rmb and took 3 week days.

The thing that sucks though is I have to leave the country every 90 days because they don't like Americans (I guess), so I'm in the process of trying to get a Z visa to start work.

Huh they don't like American's so you have to leave every 90 days?
I don't follow this. Back in about 1997. We from the USA had 30 days and since then it was raised to 90 days. And so what...I heard of 1 American who lived in Hong Kong and was for 10 years doing the 30 days in and 1 day out routine. He was not hated and had a very strong jade business going there. I have met him. Now 90 days in and 1 day out and back in for another 90 day stint 4 times a year is not bad. Considering Macau is only what 45 minutes away.

Sure you can say they don't like Americans but they did change it from 30 days to 90 days. I guess because they like Americans

I believe the statement was facetious.
