Hi all

just wondering what the best ISP is in Japan? Most people seem to be YahooBB. Would you recommend them? Is it easy to set up and internet connection/contract with them if you don't speak Japanese? I know they have an English support line, but I'm thinking more about the immediate set up. As for the set up, where;s the best place to go? I've seen some booths in Yodabashi camera and the like for YahooBB, but are there alternatives? What's the best option?

Well, if you're renting a Leopalace place, you might just get the internet free.

True, and I am, but it's awful. Very slow and basically stops if you try to use it on more than one computer/device at once.

Hm, I've never had any trouble with its just stopping, then again, I only use it with my laptop. I do wish I could get a wi-fi setting with it, though, so that I could play online battles with my DS, but that's my only complaint, for the most part.

If you're using an awful Leo Palace connection and haven't done it yet, DO NOT plug it in through the Leo Palace cable box thing. Just take the cord coming out of the wall and plug it straight into your computer/your own router. When I lived in a Leo Palace that increased my speeds by about 10x.

I used YahooBB in Japan until I moved just a couple of hundred metres up the road. The new YahooBB connection was six times slower than the old one, so I switched to OCN (NTT) and recovered half the speed. you might want to try them.

You can find a lot of cable TV/internet combo deals. Flets internet with Hikari Cable TV is a great deal. I had it last year and I paid 7,500 yen per month for internet at 100Mbps and fiber-optic cable TV.

This year, I've gone with J-com, which has digital cable TV with a hi-def recorder and internet service at 160mbps.

AU Hikari offers 1000mbps (OMFG!) internet with their cable TV/internet package.

Of course, getting a nice LCD hi-vision TV makes the cable TV that much more worth it... You can get a new 32-in AQUOS for around 45,000 yen if you look around.

Pocket wi-fi at 50mbps is a good option if you need mobile internet. Emobile, Softbank, and Docomo all offer it. You may be able to get a mobile internet/keitai package.
