Hi all
just wondering what the best ISP is in Japan? Most people seem to be YahooBB. Would you recommend them? Is it easy to set up and internet connection/contract with them if you don't speak Japanese? I know they have an English support line, but I'm thinking more about the immediate set up. As for the set up, where;s the best place to go? I've seen some booths in Yodabashi camera and the like for YahooBB, but are there alternatives? What's the best option?
Advice appreciated.
Cheers. |

Well, if you're renting a Leopalace place, you might just get the internet free. |

True, and I am, but it's awful. Very slow and basically stops if you try to use it on more than one computer/device at once. |

Why would you need to use more than one?
Complain to LeoPalace to see if they'll change the ISP, but I doubt they will.
Otherwise, to answer your question, the best one will vary with your location within Japan. Where are you? Maybe others can help. |

Hm, I've never had any trouble with its just stopping, then again, I only use it with my laptop. I do wish I could get a wi-fi setting with it, though, so that I could play online battles with my DS, but that's my only complaint, for the most part. |

I just stuck in a 3,500 yen wireless router from YamadaDenki which works fine with my DS, 360s and a couple of laptops. I run the laptops and DS on the wireless since they are easy to pair and wired the two xboxes to the router because they keep disconnecting on the wireless.
The only problem is that the funky password protocol means that I have to actually access the internet on a laptop first before my DS and xbox can connect. But once the internet is in use then the laptop can be turned off and the connection won't time out unless it is idle for a few hours. But my laptop is on more less 24/7 seeding torrents so I rarely see the leonet homepage.
But yes, not all Leopalace connections are any good. The bigger the apartment block and the more people using the connection can seriously slow it down to the point of failure. My block only has 14 apartments, only about half are occupied and only a couple of us actually really use the internet frequently so the connection is pretty good. |

If you're using an awful Leo Palace connection and haven't done it yet, DO NOT plug it in through the Leo Palace cable box thing. Just take the cord coming out of the wall and plug it straight into your computer/your own router. When I lived in a Leo Palace that increased my speeds by about 10x. |

I used YahooBB in Japan until I moved just a couple of hundred metres up the road. The new YahooBB connection was six times slower than the old one, so I switched to OCN (NTT) and recovered half the speed. you might want to try them. |

You might want to be a bit more careful about that... |

And why is that? You don't even know what I'm seeding, do you? |

You're most Likely seeding that SXSW torrent, or the entire CCmixter archive.
Yeah. |

You can find a lot of cable TV/internet combo deals. Flets internet with Hikari Cable TV is a great deal. I had it last year and I paid 7,500 yen per month for internet at 100Mbps and fiber-optic cable TV.
This year, I've gone with J-com, which has digital cable TV with a hi-def recorder and internet service at 160mbps.
AU Hikari offers 1000mbps (OMFG!) internet with their cable TV/internet package.
Of course, getting a nice LCD hi-vision TV makes the cable TV that much more worth it... You can get a new 32-in AQUOS for around 45,000 yen if you look around.
Pocket wi-fi at 50mbps is a good option if you need mobile internet. Emobile, Softbank, and Docomo all offer it. You may be able to get a mobile internet/keitai package. |
