Hello-

I am currently working as an assistant in a U.S. public school and waiting to hear if I have been accepted to grad school in Asian Studies for fall 2004. I just want an interesting adventure for the summer in a Chinese-speaking country. I spent 4 months in Beijing doing study abroad and lived in rural Japan last year on the JET Program. I am applying to the U.S.-China Educational Exchange (they are starting to advertise summer programs near Hong Kong, which would be interesting because I have never been in that area) and maybe the chinatefl Zhejiang university program summer camp. I am avoiding volunteer programs that make you pay.

However, yesterday I saw the ad for ALV Summer Camp in Taiwan. I have never been in Taiwan and am interested in going. I was surprised that they pay airfare...how can they afford to do that? Has anyone done this camp or worked for ALV? Is it in Taipei or elsewhere (their website links are not working)? Is this a fly-by-night deal where you run a big risk of getting busted for immigration over visa issues?

Any advice is very appreciated! Thanks!

Dear Taobenli,

Several different places use names similar to the one you mentioned.

Exactly where in Taiwan was the place located? If it did not say, maybe there was a phone number included that would indicate the location.

Best wishes.

Pan-chiao (Ban-chiao) is a suburb of Taipei.

That's about all I know.....

It is a children's full day bushi ban. They have a couple of programs throughout the island. Sounds to me like you are dealing with a recruiter. Better to contact the institution directly.

I have no complaints on file and their bio says they have been around since '92.
I will run a few more checks and get back to you.
Good luck,
A.

I have been seriously considering working at AVL summer camp. However, as mentioned above, I don't know where it is located. I have contacted them numerous times, and gotten good, solid responses to all of my questions except about the location of the camp itself. I definitely get the feeling that I have been dealing with a recruiter and not the camp itself. However, everything else seems to be in order.

The thing is, I am going to China in August, and AVL offered me all of July at the summer camp, so it would work out pretty well to go to Taiwan and then to China

If you find anything else, please let me know. Also, if anybody else has responded to the ads posted on this site, let me know. I am curious to know if that ad is for a specific camp or if is being used to recruit people for a number of camps.
