Appreciate it; but you guys missed the point:

My F runs out August 1; I go to get my Z in HK on July 29, but the Z IS NOT
from AUGUST 1
So do I get an L to cover the lag or what?

The clock begins ticking on your Z visa from the day you enter China.

REVIEW: your Z visa is good for 90 days from the date of issue or else the visa becomes null and void. you must enter china within those 90 days. as soon as you enter china, then the Z visa is valid for a 30 day stay, during which time you need to have the local authorities replace that Z visa with a residence permit.

not sure what you're talking about above that wasn't already said in the last thread. you said you finish a summer camp on july 27th, you get the Z visa on july 29th, enter China on July 29th or 30th, the job starts on August 24th, arrive at the school well before August 24th to get a health check etc and start processing the residence permit, you get your residence permit one or two weeks after its been applied for, case closed.

so what "lag" are you talking about?

the only "hassle" i see is if you are going to work in a university and you arrive too early and there's noone there to help you out with anything (the health check, basic admin stuff, keys to your apartment etc). Many people (admin staff) will still be on holiday in August. You'd better check with them to make sure someone with some authority is prepared to meet you on arrival.

Got me confused!! What lag?

As I see it, your NEW visa (F,L,Z doesn't matter) will be issued before your CURRENT visa expires. So what's the problem?

It's pretty basic:

Until July 1st, you're on your residence Permit (not Z visa).
July 1st - RP expires
July 2nd - 30 day F visa starts (good until August 1st)
July 29 - to Hong Kong for new Z visa. This action cancels the F Visa.
July 30 - New Z visa starts - this gives you 90 days to enter China.
August 1st - you re-enter China on the new Z visa. This starts a 30 day period in which you must get a new Residence Permit. So the new Z visa will cover you until August 31.
August 24th - new job starts.

You're covered so quit worrying.

Also it would be useful to yourself and others if you understood and used the proper terminology. Z visa is not a Residence Permit and vice versa.

Just make sure to get the RP within 30 days after you re-enter China on the new Z.

There is, however, a potential obstacle: release letter. If you are switching employers your former company needs to sign and date a form hereby "releasing" you to look for work elsewhere in China.

If this new Z visa and resident permit is with the same employer as the one you are with now, the please disregard that comment.

The release letter, as I understand it, would only be an issue if he was changing Residence Permits from one school to another. Coming in on a new Z visa *should* negate that issue.

Ah, I get what's happening here. Always get a new R.P. before the old one expires; unless you enjoy the mandatory travel. Am I using my semicolons properly?
