I did a search and back in 2005, most people were saying $1000/month wouldn't be enough in Beirut. IH has a couple of position open there right now advertised at $900-$1200/month, 26 hours/week, split shifts, no accommodation, no info on flights. They want people with a CELTA and 2 years experience. Any feedback on these conditions? Are they as irresponsible and insulting as they appear or could you make it on $1200?

If this offer is no good, anybody know of other employers in Lebanon that would offer something better to a candidate like myself? (CELTA, 1 year experience)

On this salary you are condemned to misery. Don't do it.

In general, Lebanon is not cheap. There are very few ESL positions because such a high percentage of the population is bilingual (Arabic/English) and even trilingual (Arabic/English/French).

It would be extremely difficult for a single person to live in Beruit on a salary of $1200. That being said, the positions you saw advertised offering this salary will most likely be filled by newly graduated Lebanese English teachers---not foreign hires.

Lebanon is too expensive to support entry level teachers like you... and there is already a surplus of Lebanese English teachers. There are a couple high paying gigs in Beirut (like AUB and LAU), but both require an MA plus good Middle East experience.

Good ol' IH. The add says native speakers only. Guess I'll stick around in Latin America, subsistence living here too, but at least have local contacts and language.

What other countries have you taught? Just Colombia or other Latin American countries? Just curious.

Just Colombia. I was sort of wondering/hoping that IH in Lebanon was better than the one in Colombia.

The IH job in Beirut will cover you for food and shared accommodation - use the contract to get contacts for private lessons where you can pick up the rest of your living expenses. Beirut is a great place to live, lovely people etc.. lots of things to see and do. Take a risk and have a go. I did on a lot less.
