Hi all,

Sorry for being gruff, but it is really hard to get answers. I was wondering if anyone has had success working on a student visa in Spain? How does it work? Is it legal? I have read that in general it is no allowed, but if the activity is not profitable than it is ok. I would guess that teaching English isn't going to bring home the big bucks so I wonder if that would fall under the not-so-profitable category. I have contacted the Spanish embassy and am hoping to hear back from them.

I have also heard from many folks who have worked not so legally in Spain that a blind eye is turned. Ideally I want to work on a student visa in Spain so that I can travel between the different EU countries without fear of fines or getting kicked out.

If you have info, please respond. I could really use the help!

Thank you!

You will inevitably get a bunch of people here telling you (and quite rightly) that it is illegal, but permission to stay and move around Europe is the main thing as that eliminates the very slim risk of getting a stamp on your passport and being banned from Europe for 10 years.

The authorities here are slack at the best of times and have a lot more on their list of priorities in this economic crisis than deporting a load of hard-working white middle class teachers: keep your nose clean and you'll be fine: loads of people do it here.

It is still illegal though: if you want an easier life and a level playing field visa-wise then head for Asia and come and live here as a real student on your savings.

I think the best way to get real info regarding student working visas is to apply to study at a Spanish university. Then you can ask them how to get a work visa to support your study Shocked

Addendum: Spanish border officials may still be lax - but those in other parts of Europe are definitely NOT lax in all cases! Travelling around Europe would be quite risky, really.
