|

I applied for a job about 10 days (poss. shorter) ago and have not recieved a reply. The same job (or very similar, i.e. same company) has just reposted the job.
Is it appropriate or wise to apply again for this?
Possibly changing my resume (font, wording, some content) to see if I have more success? |

It's hard to say why the school is advertising again with only the information you have given- is it a small school with only one opening at this time, or a chain that might be hiring a number of people and not have filled all the positions yet?
As for whether you should apply again after only 10 days (or less), I would say definitely not. I don't think changing the font on your resume will make any difference when presumably they have your name on file.
Wait another week at least, and then contact them to ask politely how your application is progressing. Applying again would look really odd- like you have lost track of which jobs you have applied for already, which wouldn't give a good impression. |

Thanks. The school is Bohme English Academy. Which on latter research seems to have a fairly poor rep.? However, I am hell bent on getting "a foot in" from outside of Japan. I shall wait for replies, with fingers and toes crossed.
Thanks again. |

If you are indeed "hell bent" I would be on the next plane over with temporary arrangments in a hostel or gaijin house with resumes in hand.
From what I have gleaned from these forums, applying from outside Japan at this time is extremely competitive. So in the attempt of getting "a foot in" you may just end up getting a door slammed on it repeatedly until there is no foot left to get in with.
Pack your gear and roll. |

Yes, well fortunately my partner is well on her way to gettimng a JET position. So that should give me position to locate myself comforatbly in Japan and look for jobs. Untill August when I hope to arrive, I am trying to gain a job before I leave. Although like you suggest, it is near impossible.
Thanks for the advice. |

Bohme has a bad reputation. Avoid them. If they didn't answer you in 2 weeks, it's because they wanted someone else, perhaps even less educated and more naive. |

That school does have a bad reputation in the area (Gifu/Aichi). That probably explains why they recruit from overseas.
Truth is, the hiring manager probably gets 50-100 applications every time they post an ad. He/she has to sift through them and make snap decisions to choose who to interview. Your application has to really shine. |

@ Leith
When we hire we usually run the ad's for a few weeks consecutively, and get about 50 replies per day. If the candidate doesn't fulfill all the requirements we usually don't interview them, as there are many teachers with ESL experience who apply.
We also do state on the Ad that: *Please note: Due to the large amount of applications, we are unfortunately unable to reply to unsuccessful applicants.
@Glenski
I think you'll find the school has changed a lot since Steven left the company. I understand that many people / previous teachers had problems with him, but I have been working at Bohme for 2 years and have had no problems with Akemi or the school. |

If your partner is going on JET then it's simple- go with her. There are quite a few JETs in my pref who came over with their partners, who got jobs at local english schools within a few weeks of arriving. The JET salary is enough to feed both of you until you get a job. |

@ troglodyte
I think we can agree to disagree- you worked at the school in 2001- that a hell of a long time ago, and things change a lot in 10 years.
At the moment 4 / 7 teachers have been here 2 years or more. And 5 / 7 teachers were referred by previous teachers. You clearly looked at the website, did you notice that all the teachers are "head" of something? We all have extra responsibilities, like I said before a lot of things have changed since your time at Bohme.
@ Leith
Kotoko is right, it's much easier to find a job when you are in Japan. Especially if you are near Nagoya. There is not much going in Gifu City at the moment, but come September there should be a few jobs going. Your partner can also ask the current JETs if they can help you get your foot in. |

Does partner = husband or wife? Are you planing on living together? If so you'll be able to live off of the one salary until you find work. Has your partner made contact with his/her pred. yet? They may know of position openings in the area. I've had four or five jobs offered to my husband already. Of course, with all things JET, ESID. |
