Hello all!!
I've been living in Mexico City for two years now and I'm wanting to try another place. The salaries here are too low and some people have told me to try Japan so I thought, why not?
I have a few questions I hope someone here will answer.
Do I need to go back to the States to do the visa process or can I do it from Mexico City? (I'm considering Aeon school).
According to their website, Aeon doesn't discriminate because of age and I'll be 42 later this month. But I look like I'm 30 something.
Does anyone know anything about Aeon? Is it true what they say they will pay? Normally around 270,000 yen per month and they also provide the apt. True?
Any infomation would be greatly appreciated. One more thing. Any shots REQUIRED?? I ask becuase I'm not big on vaccines but if I had to...
A physical? I ask becuase the physical always seems to be required her in DF.
Thanks!! |

I don't believe AEON interviews people in Mexico, so you'll have to return to the States for that, unless AEON is very accommodating to do it in Japan. Yes, that's just for the interview. Visa proceedings don't start until after you've been accepted for the job, and yes, you can do all of that paperwork from the USA or anywhere else.

What age you look like means nothing. They'll see your age on your passport. Plenty of "old-timers" like you around. Heck, I started at that age!

AEON is one of the most reliable employers in Japan for EFL work. Take care in understanding what "provide an apartment" means. It's not that they pay the rent; you do that, but they have a place already furnished (secondhand goods, no doubt, from the previous teachers), and I think AEON has an upper limit on how much teachers pay for rent (the rest AEON takes care of). Salaries might differ depending on the branch office, but they still pay a fair wage like you stated.

What is "her in DF"?
No worries about needing shots or a physical for the visa. I also think that AEON (and most employers) don't require a health check for the actual job. |

I think he meant to say "here in D.F."..."Mexico D.F." is how some of the locals refer to Mexico City... |

I'm not sure if it's similar there but I am in an Australian capital city that is not on the frequent interview sites on the AEON website. However, at least once a year they interview in my city. It would be worth contacting them to check if they do interview in Mexico City. Otherwise plan a holiday to wherever they do interview!
According to the information provided, they pay 270,000/month (minus health/pension and the 11% tax rate). As Glenski said, AEON will subsidise rent in a provided apartment so you only pay up to 55,000/month. The only downside to this is that they claim they are "locked" into paying for that apartment so if you get there and decide you want to find your own accommodation you will end up paying for both AEON apartment and your own.
I'll be starting work with them later this year. |

I missed the last bit - I can confirm no health check required! |

Not that similar since Australia is an English speaking country whilst Mexico is not.
They say that "AEON recruits from several English speaking countries around the world" and that they employ native English speakers or non-natives with at least 10 years education taught in English with a degree from an English speaking country, so it would probably not be worth the resources going to Mexico at all.
The OP can still ask, but I doubt that Mexico is a place any eikawa or dispatch service will spend the time and money interviewing in.
Their best bet would be to take a holiday up to the States for the interview. |

Thank you all for the information!! I really appreciate it! I think I'll start writing that 500 word essay and see how things go from there. I have twelve years experience working in the admin side at universities in the States and five years experience taeching ESL and EFL.
I have applied to many job postings in the States for universities but I haven't heard anything yet. Possibly because things are still bad in the States. At least that's what my sister and friends keep telling me.
Thanks again all!! |

As far as I am aware, no employer can force you to pay for an apartment that you don't occupy.
When I moved out of my 'bijou' GEOS apartment into a flat with my wife, head office added the apartment costs to the monthly target for the school.
Naturally, this didn't make me particularly popular with the school manager, but they didn't even propose subtracting the cost from my salary. |

They can if they take it out of your paycheck before you even see it. It's in the contract anyway, I believe. |
