Well after four years of living and working here as a teacher,. I by chance
stumbled across this forum and spent two hours reading, smiling and nodding at experiences good and bad.
I came here to Antalya four years ago and although spent 6 months workiing in China have mostly enjoyed my time here.
Just wondered if there were any other native speakers here from England who live in the Antalya region ? |

I have to say - I love the Antalya region. I was out there in December looking around resorts/properties with work and particularly fell in love with Alanya. It just seems to me to have a little bit of everything, the little street markets, cafe society, a bit of history - it was such a shame I only had 5 days to look around the whole region. I guess that is one of my many reasons for wanting to move to Turkey.
I'll be moving to the Ankara area (for my sins - it is a bit of a concrete jungle!) but there are things to do and being a city girl I've found pretty much the same diversions there as I have here! |

It is a great place to live and I never think of leaving here. I've seemed to have stumbled on the lifestyle I have always wanted to live.
The thing I love most about here and Turkey in general is that you always seem to find something new and interesting. Maybe little things like a small park or maybe a below stairs bar hidden away from tourist where you can get a beer for 2-3 YTL, instead of the usual tourist price of 6 YTL.
I stumbled across an amazing English second hand book shop the other day called The Owl Book shop in Kalici. It has every conceivable book you can imagine. Also very cheap i paid 35 YTL for 10 top class hardbacks. The owner is an incredible guy who even in winter sits in his shop without a shirt off! Whilst i was browsing last time he actually asked me to mind the shop for ten minutes while he went out the back to kill a chicken!
The scenery as with most of Turkey is amazing and everytime I drive the Antalya to Kemer road it just stuns me with the views.
Of course, there are drawbacks, The humidity in August, the monsoon rains in winter and the inability of Turkish drivers even to obey the easiest of road signs!
Working here has been a little bit of a nightmare. Like lots of people I found the usual problems. Not getting paid on time etc. The worst though was the owner of a well known lanquage school here who threatened to have me killed if I left and worked for another school!!
So now I work alone and have a good cliental and always get them to pay 1 month in advance and warn them that if they cancel the lesson less then 24 hours before the lesson they lose the lesson. Working this way has given me no problems whatsoever. |
