Is there anyway I can get around not having to go back to the UK to get one?

If you have family or friends back in the UK still they can help you. I filled in the forms (which I downloaded from my local constabulary website) scanned them onto the computer, and them emailed them home. Family in the UK sent them off to the station and sent my family the reply. They then sent it on to me.

It's the arm of the Scottish government that does criminal record checks. However, they're good for the whole UK and you don't need to live in Scotland to get it. And you can do the whole thing online. Took about 10 days to get mine and cost �30 or some such.

I came here from China where they wouldn't give me a police check, and my school here eventually said don't worry about it and they 'found a way around it.'
